This morning, students were peacefully picketing Charles Stewart House in support of the occupation. A private security guard, hired by the University, threw a protester to the ground and held them to the floor by their throat. This behaviour is horrific, and show us once again that the University's supposed commitment to allow for peaceful protest is a farce.
The occupants are suggesting that people e-mail [email protected] and [email protected] to voice their concerns.

The Edinburgh University Socialist Society is a radical, anti-capitalist force on campus. We aim to unite all socialists on campus, of all parties and none. We stand for the replacement of capitalism with socialism, and through this the eradication of poverty, exploitation and greed worldwide — towards a more just and equal society, based on democratic control of the economy.

STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE DIVESTMENT OCCUPATION
On Wednesday, May 13, a group of Edinburgh University students began occupying Charles Stewart House, a central University management building. This action is a response to the University's refusal to divest from fossil fuels. They will leave when the University pledges to divest from coal and tar sands but the campaign continues until the University commits to unconditionally divest from both arms and fossil fuels.
The University Court’s decision is only one of many that prioritise profits over morals, and that systematically undermine the opinions of students. It should be considered as standing in a wider context of the increasing influence of market forces on our Universities that is a necessary component of neoliberal capitalism. This is only one of many reasons why the movement for divestment is closely connected to the fight for social justice.
Edinburgh University Socialist Society stands in solidarity with those students occupying, protesting and supporting the divestment campaign. We unequivocally support the right to protest and condemn the University’s attempts at restricting access to the occupation.
