Step into Gladstone’s Land!
One of the oldest buildings on the Royal Mile stands in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. A cafe on the ground floor and 400 years of history in the floors above, there’s something for everyone.
Try on period hats, peek into how people once lived, and finish with a well-earned ice cream. Our dedicated volunteers and staff are ready to welcome you into our property all year round.
Cafe: 9am–6pm
Self Guided Tours: 10am–2:30pm
Guided Tours: 3pm
Come for the cake, stay for the history, leave with a smile. 🍰

Did you know that Gladstone’s Land had been the location of many businesses throughout our history!
One being Mr Muir’s Refreshment House, which was listed on the property valuation record in 1855! You can see this sign today as you are walking up the Mile.
We continue this long tradition of coffee houses in the property with our own coffee shop on the ground floor of the property.

Gladstone’s Land cordially invites you to a very special tea party indeed where our storytellers share the fascinating story of tea over a cup of tea. Or two. Or three.
“Tea is one of the mainstays of civilisation in this country” writes George Orwell in 1946. But when and how did the British develop such an affinity for a drink that they had to travel half across the world to obtain? And how has tea time become such a staple of the British cultural identity?
