One of the oldest buildings in Edinburgh. Cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. In 1617 Thomas Gladstone and Bessie Cunningham purchase 477 Lawnmarket.

A typical Royal Mile building, it towered seven stories high and stood just a stone's throw from the Castle. They rent out the basement as a tavern, the ground floors to merchants, the coveted first floor to the wealthiest of Edinburgh's elite and the subsequent floors to the slightly less well off. They decorate the main rooms in the height of fashionable interiors and add a touch of decadence wi

Our sold out lecture has returned for another year!

After the Trial: Edinburgh’s Sapphic Scandal

🗓️ Thursday 25th of June
🕰️ 7pm
🎟️ £6.50

This Pride month, join researcher and writer Indigo Dunphy-Smith for an evening lecture exploring the aftermath of the libel trial that became known as Edinburgh’s 19th-century sapphic scandal. Discover Gladstone’s Land’s direct connection to the 1811 defamation case, in which two Edinburgh teachers fought to clear their names after a pupil accused them of being in a same-sex relationship. The story explores how the themes of race, class and sexuality played out against the backdrop of Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town.
This lecture examines how the verdict shaped the characters’ lives beyond the trial. It also traces how the story went on to inspire writers and filmmakers more than a century later, such as The Children’s Hour (1961), starring Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine and the new film The Education of Jane Cu***ng (2026).
Along the way we’ll discuss how the legal parameters around q***r relationships and connections continued to shape the story right up until the present day.

Doors Open at 6:30pm
