Jamie Dobson: Fighting for Na h-Eileanan an Iar at Holyrood

In communities like Inverclyde, North Ayrshire or Argyll & Bute, there is a deep-seated sense of anger at the Scottish Government's mishandling of lifeline ferry services.

They deserve better than countless SNP ministers who've shown they can’t be trusted with lifeline links.

Scotland has so much going for it. But right now it feels like our country simply isn’t working.

In May's election, every vote for the Scottish Liberal Democrats on the peach ballot paper will deliver change with fairness at its heart.

16,000 ferry journeys cancelled for technical faults since 2023.

Scottish Liberal Democrat transport spokesperson Jamie Greene MSP has said the SNP are a drag on island and coastal communities after new research by his party found that more than 16,000 ferries have been cancelled due to technical faults since 2023.

These failures have more fundamental ramifications for island life. The Sound of Harris ferry’s poor reliability contributes to the requirement for southern isles pregnant mothers to find accommodation in Stornoway for a whole month around their due dates.

And ferry unreliability is a significant factor in working age adults deciding to move to the mainland. This adds weight to Jamie Green’s remark that our island communities are denied basic rights deemed normal by mainland Scots.

Scottish Liberal Democrats would stand up for our island communities, ensuring they have access to the ferries needed and, with our plans for a new Ferries Bill and replacing the ageing ferry fleet, we have a realistic plan to get Scotland moving again.

Jamie’s offer to the Western Isles:

I know you feel dumped on by politics. So many of you have told me that you are fed up to the back teeth with politicians who promise the earth but don't deliver. I am not a career politician; I care about our local communities and want to see change with fairness at its heart. Your priorities are my priorities. I will pitch in, get involved and make sure your voices are heard in Holyrood.
