As it's , we want to celebrate the orchards at Killerton. 🍏🍎🌳

Apple and c***r production have long been part of the heritage of the estate, and we're still making award winning apple juice and c***r today using traditional methods. See what goes into the process, from twig to swig. 🍏🍎🌳

This rare beauty is the Clifden Nonpareil moth, one of the largest British moth species. 🩵 We’re delighted to spot one on the Killerton estate as it’s quite a treat to see.

The moth became extinct as a breeding species in the UK by the 1960s but has recolonised in recent years. Preferring wooded areas, the Clifden Nonpareil moth often likes to rest on tree trunks and walls. With its wings closed, the mottled greys and browns provide excellent camouflage.

The moth is also known as the Blue Underwing as when its disturbed, it reveals a striking flash of blue on its underwings to deter predators (you can just see a peek of the colour on the photo).🩵

The library at Killerton has been featured in the Autumn edition of the National Trust members magazine. 📚

Killerton's library is one of the few historic house libraires where you're actively encouraged to take a book from the shelf, settle back in a comfy chair and enjoy a quite read.

Would you like to sit and read in the library, just as the Acland family once did ? 📚

What do you call a man with a spade on his head? 🪏

Doug.

Do you and Doug fancy lending a hand to plant the trees of the future? 🌳

Throughout the winter, Killerton’s countryside team and the local community will be planting trees on the Killerton estate. We will be planting mixed broadleaf species including alder and willow in Ashclyst Forest, and we would love your help. 🌳

There will be two planting days:

Saturday 7 and Sunday 22 November with planting sessions at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.

Please book on the time slot(s) you plan to attend. You're welcome to stay for the whole day, but please book a place on each individual session you would like to join.

All equipment needed for tree planting will be provided and no experience is necessary.

To learn more and to book your place, please visit: https://bit.ly/AshclystTreePlanting

We hope to see you there! 🌳

Nothing says autumn quite like a pumpkin spiced latte. 🍂🧡

You can now enjoy your favourite hot drink in the Stables Coffee Shop and Killerton Kitchen Café, or grab one to takeaway as you explore early autumn colour around the estate.

🌼 We've come full circle on the life cycle of the wildflower meadows at Killerton. 🌼

You've seen the meadows in full flower, the ranger team harvesting the seed, and now seeding the meadow so we will see new growth again next year. 🌼

Sowing the seed in the autumn is beneficial to the wildflower meadows. The wildflower seeds we are sowing, such as Yellow Rattle, need frost to break their seeds dormancy, helping them germinate in spring. This way as other plants are slowing down, the wildflowers will get an early start and can outcompete the more intrusive weeds.

🐝🦋🐁 We're helping to sustain and enrich the meadows for the future, which in turn will create more opportunities for native wildflowers, bees, butterflies and other wildlife to flourish. 🐝🦋🐁

🍄 It's not just the garden flowers that bring beauty to the estate. Keep an eye out for the amazing fungi and mushrooms popping up across the landscape too. 🍄

These fascinating fungi do far more than brighten up a woodland walk. They're nature's recyclers, helping to break down dead and decaying material and return valuable nutrients to the soil. Many plants, insects and animals benefit from the habitats they help create.

You might notice fallen deadwood left in place around the estate. It provides a vital home for fungi and the wildlife that depends on them. Next time you're out exploring, see how many different shapes, sizes and colours of fungi you can spot! 🍄
