Eyemouth Coastguard โ€“ Coastal Safety Advice

The Met Office has warned of a spell of unsettled weather, with Storm Austen followed by Storm Boelo, bringing strong winds and heavy rain to parts of Scotland and the UK.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Storm Boelo is expected to affect Scotland from Saturday, 24 October, into Sunday, 25 October. The Met Office warns that gusts of 55โ€“65 mph are possible widely across affected areas, with gusts of 70โ€“80 mph or more possible in exposed coastal locations and on high ground. Heavy rain will add to the risk of disruption.

๐ŸŒŠ OUR SAFETY ADVICE

๐Ÿ”น Stay well back from the sea. Powerful waves can reach much further up the shore than expected and sweep people off their feet.

๐Ÿ”น Avoid harbour walls, piers and exposed rocks. Waves breaking over these areas can be extremely dangerous, even if the sea initially appears manageable.

๐Ÿ”น Keep away from cliff edges. Strong gusts, wet ground and slippery paths increase the risk of falls.

๐Ÿ”น Don't go wave watching. Please don't put yourself or others at risk for photographs or videos of stormy seas.

๐Ÿ”น Prepare for strong winds and heavy rain. Secure loose outdoor items, take care when travelling and be alert to fallen branches, debris, surface water and localised flooding.

๐Ÿ”น Check before you travel. Conditions can change quickly, so keep up to date with the latest Met Office warnings and forecasts.

๐Ÿšจ IF YOU SEE SOMEONE IN DIFFICULTY
Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Give the location as accurately as possible and do not enter the water or attempt a rescue yourself.

๐Ÿ“ข Please share this post with friends, family and visitors to our area.

Our coastline is part of what makes Eyemouth and the surrounding villages so special, but during severe weather it deserves extra respect.

Stay safe, stay weather-aware and please don't take unnecessary risks.

๐Ÿšจ Rope Rescue Training โ€“ A Successful Weekend! ๐Ÿง—โ€โ™‚๏ธ

This weekend, two of our newest Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) from Eyemouth Coastguard joined officers from Berwick Coastguard rescue team and Newbiggin Coastguard Rescue Team for their Rope Operator Course.

Training took place in Berwick on Saturday before moving to Eyemouth on Sunday, with all three teams coming together for two intensive days of training and assessment in rope rescue operations.

Throughout the weekend, the officers covered a range of essential skills, including locating and securing casualties, building secure holdfasts and anchor systems, and safely lowering and recovering rope technicians and casualties in challenging environments.

After two demanding days of practical training and assessments, we're delighted to report that all officers passed and are now fully competent Rope Operators! ๐Ÿ‘

This is a fantastic achievement and another important step in ensuring our teams have the skills and confidence needed to respond safely and effectively when called upon.

A huge well done to everyone involved, and thanks to all the officers who supported the training over the weekend. It's great to see our neighbouring teams working together, sharing knowledge and building the skills that help keep our communities safe.

Well done to all! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿšจ Seal Pup Season โ€“ Please Give Them Space! ๐Ÿฆญ

As we come into seal pup season, you may notice more seals hauled out along our coastline. This is completely normal โ€“ they often come ashore to rest, digest, and conserve energy.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What to do if you see a seal or pup:
* Keep well back โ€“ at least 100 metres if possible.
* Keep dogs on leads and children close.
* Do not attempt to touch, feed, or move the seal.
* Seals are wild animals and can become stressed or aggressive if approached too closely.

Remember, itโ€™s perfectly normal for pups to be alone on the beach โ€“ their mothers are often nearby or out feeding.

If you have genuine concerns that a seal pup is injured, sick, or in immediate danger, please contact the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) on ๐Ÿ“ž 01825 765546.

Letโ€™s all do our bit to help protect our local wildlife and ensure these amazing creatures thrive along our beautiful coastline. ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’™

Date: Saturday 26th September 2026
Time: 21:03

On Saturday evening, Eyemouth Coastguard were called out alongside RNLI Eyemouth Lifeboat and Police Scotland Scottish Borders following a number of reports of a red distress flare being sighted in the Eyemouth area.

Working together, all three services carried out a thorough search of the coastline, covering the area from Killingdraught Bay through to Hawk Ness.

After a few hours of searching, with all areas checked and no further sightings or information received, the decision was made to stand all teams down. Thankfully, nothing untoward was found and there was no indication that anyone was in distress.

๐Ÿ‘ We would also like to reassure those who reported the sightings that they did exactly the right thing. If you see what you believe to be a red distress flare, it is important that you report it. Members of the public should never assume that someone else has already raised the alarm.

โš ๏ธ A strong reminder about marine flares
Red marine flares are distress signals and should only ever be used in a genuine emergency when assistance is required.

When a red flare is reported, it is treated as a genuine distress situation. This can result in a full emergency response being mobilised, involving Coastguard teams, lifeboats, Police Scotland and other emergency services โ€” in much the same way as making a 999 call.

Using a flare when there is no emergency can potentially put people at risk, tie up valuable emergency resources and could delay assistance to someone who genuinely needs it.

๐Ÿ“ž If you are in genuine danger at sea or on the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

A big thank you to everyone involved in Saturday evening's search for the professionalism, teamwork and commitment shown throughout.

The team was once again tasked along with Berwick Coastguard rescue team, this time following a concern for a person on the cliff tops.

Thankfully, this turned out to be a false alarm, but one raised with the best of intentions. Itโ€™s always better to report a genuine concern and allow the emergency services to investigate than to ignore something that could potentially be serious. โค๏ธ

A huge well done to all our team members who have given up their time over the past 24 hours. From the early hours of the morning through to the afternoon, everyone has worked together professionally and safely.

๐Ÿ‘ Another busy period for the Eyemouth Coastguard Team, supporting our local community and keeping our coastline safe.

Please remember: if you see something that concerns you around our coastline, donโ€™t hesitate to report it. It could make all the difference.

๐Ÿ“ž In an emergency, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Date: Sunday 13th September 2026
Time: 17:40

Yesterday evening, Eyemouth Coastguard Rescue Team was called alongside St Abbs Lifeboat, RNLI Dunbar Lifeboats and the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter from Carlisle following reports of a capsized kayaker near Siccar Point.

While en route, we were updated that the casualty had managed to swim ashore and was being assisted by a fisherman. Our team made contact with the casualty and provided care, while St Abbs Lifeboat recovered the kayak and returned it to the awaiting Coastguard team at Pease Bay.

The casualty was very cold and had swallowed a significant amount of water, so an ambulance was requested for further assessment.

Once the casualty was safely in the care of the ambulance service, all teams were stood down and returned to station.

A big thank you to the first informant โ€” you did exactly the right thing by reporting your concerns.

If you see something at sea or along the coast that doesnโ€™t look right, donโ€™t hesitate to report it. Itโ€™s always better to raise the alarm and let the professionals establish whether assistance is required.

Be bright, be seen ๐Ÿฉท

See how much easier it is to spot someone in the water?

Wearing bright colours such as neon yellow, green, orange and pink can improve your visibility in the water and make it easier for others to spot you if you get into difficulty.

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

๐Ÿ“Ÿ Attendance Requested ๐Ÿ“Ÿ
Date: Saturday 22nd August 2026
Time: 10:50

This morning, Eyemouth Coastguard Rescue Team was requested, alongside Dunbar Coastguard and RNLI Eyemouth Lifeboat, following a report of kayakers possibly being in difficulty.

Our teams met with the first informant, who pointed out the area of concern and provided the information they had. This was then passed on to Eyemouth Lifeboat, who were already out conducting their weekly training exercise.

The lifeboat crew were able to investigate and confirm that there were no persons at risk or requiring assistance. They did, however, identify two small vessels out fishing in the area.
With all appearing to be well, all teams were stood down and returned to their respective stations.

๐ŸŒŠ Stay safe around our coast.
