There is a long list of notifications in this newsletter but the top three are:
• Mawnan Parish Council is holding an election for our 10th Cllr on 4th December. This has come about because 10 signatures were submitted to Cornwall Council to hold a parish wide election for the vacant seat. If you are interested them please email [email protected] or Cornwall Council as soon as possible to get your application pack.
• Perran Moon MP is in Mawnan this Saturday from 9am-11am. For more information or to book a slot with him email [email protected].
• Budock Vean Hotel are presenting their spa expansion plans in the meeting next week- I suspect these may be of interest to quite a few of you so this is your chance to come and ask questions.
Here we go with the other ones:
**Mawnan Emergency Group is holding a meeting on 6th November in the Memorial Hall. Their next priority is to compile a list of volunteers who would be willing to become a nominated "Neighbourhood Friend". The idea is for each "Friend" to visit a defined list of properties within your neighbourhood for a quick welfare check to ensure that all is well when it is safe to do so. Any problems could then be passed to the team leaders at the hub, who could coordinate resources and hopefully provide help and assistance.
To get the Neighbourhood Friend list started in advance of the meeting, if you are interested (or just want to know more) please email them at [email protected] to let them know:-
1. if you are able to come
2. roughly what area you would be prepared to cover as a neighbourhood friend. An initial suggestion is 20 properties per volunteer for a quick welfare check.

**Cornwall’s Safer Cornwall Partnership is currently consulting on a new Antisocial Behaviour (ASB) Strategy. The strategy is being developed to reduce ASB, support victims, and strengthen the way agencies work together to respond to local concerns. **Work is well underway on Bickland Water Road, with the team making good progress through Phase One of the scheme. The initial works involve widening the footway along Bickland Hill. To date, approximately 50 metres of kerbing and drainage have been completed, and asphalt has been laid along the widened footway.
Every effort is being made to accelerate progress where possible, to allow the temporary traffic lights to be moved further along the road. This will help reduce the impact on traffic and ease congestion around Union Corner Roundabout. In the coming weeks, the electrical team will remove the existing central bollards within the carriageway to allow the installation of the first set of pedestrian-controlled traffic lights. These signals will remain inactive initially while the wider works progress and the necessary arrangements are put in place.
We’re aware that roadworks of this nature and the associated traffic management can cause disruption to the travelling public and those living nearby. Please be assured that we will do all we can to keep this to a minimum, while ensuring the safety of road users and our workforce.
Full project details can be seen at https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/ and if you have any questions or concerns, you can reach us on 0300 1234 222 or email [email protected].
**Update on building works at Falmouth Community Hospital
We are now entering the second phase of the upgrade and installation of a new heating system at Falmouth Community Hospital, with the first stage of the main building works set to start this weekend.
Work to install the new heating system will begin with the minor injury unit area. That team will move into a temporary space onsite this weekend. To allow for the move to take place safely, the minor injury unit will be closed on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October. The rest of the hospital will remain open as normal.
The minor injury unit will be up and running in its new, temporary space from 8am on Monday 5 October. Patients and clinicians will need to enter the unit via the day room, which is the area to the right of the current main entrance. This will be clearly signposted on arrival. We expect the works on the existing minor injury unit space to take around 6 weeks.
Once work on the existing space is complete, other service areas within the hospital will follow suit. This phased approach will allow us to move rooms and equipment around to maintain day services. It will ensure we can keep disruption to a minimum and is why the full building work is not expected to be complete until next summer.
As parts of the building will be without water or heating at different times, we cannot safely maintain inpatient services. As a result, Boscawen Ward will remain closed for the duration of the works. This temporary closure of inpatient services will allow the upgrade to be carried out safely. People should continue to access day services and appointments in the usual way.
We apologise for any inconvenience and thank patients and colleagues for bearing with us during these essential works. They are a major investment to ensure the hospital remains safe, modern, and fit for the future. It also shows our commitment to the site as a much-valued local asset.
Throughout the upgrade, we will continue to work with clinical staff and our partners in primary care, social care, and the voluntary sector to provide much more care at home and in the community. Delivering the best and safest care possible remains paramount.
Phew right that’s it!
I’m off to hunker down and get through the storm
See you next week and I hope everyone is okay
Mel
