Every child deserves a classroom where they can thrive.

But making this a reality means equipping teachers with the skills to recognise and respond to different learning needs.

In partnership with Pencils Of Promise, we delivered four days of inclusive education training to over 300 educators across Ghana’s Volta and Eastern Regions.

From identifying signs of developmental delays and disabilities to adapting teaching strategies and developing Individualised Learning Support Plans, the training focused on practical ways to make classrooms more inclusive.

It was Thelma's first introduction to inclusive education and her experience reflects the importance of giving educators the knowledge and tools to support every learner.

🐷How one pig can change a family's life...

Emmanuel and Kizza live in Rwanda with their young daughter, Ashimwe, who has a physical and an intellectual disability. For a long time the family struggled to access the medical support she needed.

Everything changed when Emmanuel and Kizza joined The Big Pig Project, a Chance for Childhood initiative that helps families raising children with disabilities build sustainable livelihoods through pig farming.

Emmanuel and Kizza were given a pregnant pig, which soon gave birth to piglets. Emmanuel and Kizza kept three to grow their own small business, and gave five to other families raising children with disabilities. With the income from pig farming, they have been able to purchase medical insurance, pay for transport to hospital appointments, and provide Ashimwe with nutritious food and school supplies.

We’re delighted to announce that Chance for Childhood has been shortlisted for the Safeguarding Children’s Data Award!

The award recognises organisations and individuals working to protect children and young people in digital spaces, including through privacy, digital literacy and technology designed with children’s safety in mind.

As technology becomes an increasingly important part of how we support children and strengthen education systems, safeguarding their data must be part of that work too.

Through initiatives such as our Disability Detect App, we use technology to help identify children who may need additional support, while keeping children’s rights, safety and wellbeing at the centre.

We’re grateful to Africa Digital Rights' Hub for recognising the importance of safeguarding children in digital spaces, and we’re proud to be part of this conversation.

Guess what we were up to over the weekend?

We were in Musanze, Rwanda, bringing together 33 education stakeholders to help make inspection systems more inclusive for children with disabilities.

From 24 to 27 September, Chance for Childhood Rwanda worked alongside Rwanda’s Ministry of Education (MINEDUC), the National Examination and School Inspection Authority (NESA), and several stakeholders working in special needs and inclusive education.

The workshop brought together 33 experts who reviewed accreditation standards and guidelines, developed an accreditation checklist for special schools, and strengthened existing inspection tools to make them more inclusive.

When inspection systems are designed to recognise and respond to the needs of learners with disabilities, they can play an important role in making inclusion part of how education quality is understood and assessed.

This activity is part our RISE project funded by The Scottish Government led by Link Education International and implemented by Chance for Childhood, School-to-School Zambia, and Link Community Development Malawi - LCDM

“Every $1 invested in early childhood development can lead to a return of as much as $17.”

Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown made the case for investing in the earliest years, because what we invest in children today shapes the opportunities they have tomorrow.

But that investment must be inclusive. As our Head of Fundraising and Communications, Matt Zeqiri, says in this video from , we need to make sure every child can benefit, including children with disabilities who are too often left behind.

If we are serious about the returns of investing in early childhood, we also need to be serious about making sure every child is included.

This week, changemakers, NGOs and world leaders are at the UN General Assembly, asking what it will take to restore trust, manage transformation and ensure the United Nations delivers for all.

We're there for the first time, and here's what we think delivering for all requires when it comes to children with disabilities.

1. Make inclusive education the standard
Children with disabilities are still being educated separately or not at all. Classrooms and teachers must be equipped to include children with disabilities, with inclusive practice embedded in national training systems and curricula rather than treated as an add-on.

2. Close the disability data gap through technology
Millions of children with disabilities across Africa remain unidentified because screening systems do not reach them. Governments must invest in scalable, accessible tools that detect disabilities early and connect children to support before they fall behind.

3. Protect children's images in the digital age
AI makes it easier than ever to generate and circulate images of children without consent. Governments must strengthen child safeguarding frameworks to address how children's images are used and shared, including in humanitarian and development contexts.

4. Fund the economic pathways that keep children in school
Disability and school exclusion compound with family poverty. When families are economically secure, children stay in school. Governments must invest in inclusive savings, livelihoods and social protection for families of children with disabilities as an education strategy, not just an economic one.

5. Resource community-led delivery
Lasting change happens when communities lead it. Governments and funders must invest in models that build local capacity, transfer ownership and equip communities to sustain services for children independently, long after external funding ends.

These are the changes we want to see come out of . What would you add?

We’re at in New York.

Matt, our Head of Fundraising and Communications, is speaking with people across the INGO and development sector about what it takes to create lasting change for children and communities.

Here, he catches up with Jake White, Director of Partnerships & Corporate Fundraising at Street child, to hear more about their work across Africa.

Our vision is a world where every childhood is filled with safety, belonging and play and a United Nations that delivers for all must deliver for every child.
