๐ŸŒŠ Cleaning our coastline together ๐Ÿšฎ๐Ÿ’™

Landguard volunteers recently joined Port of Felixstowe employees, friends and family for the Marine Conservation Societyโ€™s (MCS) annual Great British Beach Clean ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿงค.

On a pleasantly sunny Saturday morning โ˜€๏ธ, volunteers worked together to collect litter from the beach next to the Port.

The Port and Landguard have supported and promoted MCS events for many years ๐Ÿค, helping to raise awareness of the importance of protecting our coastline and marine environment ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿš๐ŸŸ.

In total, 13.3 kg of litter was collected โ™ป๏ธ, including numerous cigarette butts ๐Ÿšฌ, drinks cans ๐Ÿฅค, bottle tops, fishing waste ๐ŸŽฃ, food wrappers, vapes, clothing ๐Ÿ‘•, glass bottles, foil, cable ties, takeaway containers ๐ŸŸ and much more.

This event was a wonderful example of people coming together to make a positive difference in their local community ๐Ÿ’š. Thank you to everyone who took part ๐Ÿ™Œ and helped make the beach cleaner โœจ and more beautiful ๐ŸŒ….

๐Ÿพ Cordons Removed, But Dog Restrictions Remain in Place ๐Ÿพ

With the end of the bird nesting season, the temporary cordons have now been removed from the beach. This means the former nesting area is once again open to public access, including dog walkers.

๐Ÿšจ Please remember: Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times within the areas marked red and yellow on the reserve maps and must not be exercised off-lead in these zones. Dogs may only be exercised off-lead within the area marked green. Maps are displayed at all reserve entrances.

Keeping dogs under control helps protect the wildlife and fragile shingle habitat that make Landguard such a special place throughout the year ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŒฟ. It also helps ensure the reserve remains welcoming and enjoyable for everyone, including:

๐Ÿ• Dog owners and walkers
๐Ÿพ Visitors with nervous or reactive dogs
๐ŸŒ… People enjoying nature, wildlife and the coast

Thank you for helping us care for this unique reserve and for showing consideration to other visitors and wildlife alike. Together, we can keep Landguard a safe, welcoming and wildlife friendly place for all. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿฆ Volunteers Support Ground-Nesting Birds at Landguard Nature Reserve ๐ŸŒฟ

We were delighted to welcome employees from the Port of Felixstowe alongside Landguard volunteers, who joined our team to remove the posts and cordons erected in March to help protect the breeding area for ground-nesting birds. ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿค

Landguard Nature Reserve is an important local wildlife habitat and community asset, and we are grateful to the Port of Felixstowe and everyone who supported our work to protect and enhance the areaโ€™s unique biodiversity. ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฑ

๐Ÿ”จ Essential Environment Agency Improvement Works at Landguard

Visitors to Landguard may notice contractors working along the sea wall over the coming weeks as part of essential Environment Agency improvement works.

The contractors will be installing new Kee Klamp safety railings along sections of the sea wall. These railings are being fitted to improve visitor safety, and the work is expected to continue for up to four weeks.

โš ๏ธ Please be aware that heavy machinery will be operating within the work area during this period.

To help ensure the safety of visitors, staff, contractors, and wildlife:

โœ… Follow all temporary signage and instructions on site
โœ… Take extra care when moving through or around working areas
โœ… Keep dogs under close control and be mindful of any off-lead dogs near machinery and contractors
โœ… Allow contractors space to carry out their work safely

We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these important improvements are completed. The works will help make Landguard a safer place for everyone to enjoy in the future.

Thank you for your understanding.

๐Ÿƒ We were also delighted to cheer on the many runners taking part in the Richard Bennett Coastal 10 Mile Race, as they passed through Landguard on their coastal challenge. Congratulations to everyone who took part!

05/08/2026

๐Ÿ”ฅWildfires are becoming more common across the UK and with hot, dry conditions and coastal winds the risk of fire at Landguard is greater.

๐Ÿ”ฅThe vast majority โ€“ around 85โ€“90%, start because of human actions. BBQs, bonfires, discarded ci******es, hot ash, and even glass left in vegetation can all ignite dry ground. Naturally occurring wildfires in the UK are extremely rare.

๐Ÿ”ฅLong spells of heat and drought dry out vegetation and make it far easier for fires to start and spread. Extreme weather doesnโ€™t always spark a fire, but it creates the perfect conditions for one to take hold quickly.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธWildfires have serious impacts on birds. Although some birds can escape the flames, many cannot. Fires can destroy nests, eggs and chicks, remove vital food sources, strip away shelter, and create smoke that affects birdsโ€™ breathing and navigation. The effects can last long after the fire is out.

Other wildlife is also at risk. Reptiles, invertebrates and small mammals are especially vulnerable because they cannot escape quickly.

๐ŸฆŽ Reptiles often shelter in vegetation or burrows and can be killed by fast moving flames or intense heat.

๐Ÿ› Invertebrates โ€“ the foundation of many food webs, are easily wiped out, reducing food availability for birds, bats and small mammals.

๐Ÿ Small mammals such as voles, shrews and mice can be trapped in dense vegetation or underground nests, and fires can destroy the cover they rely on for survival. The loss of these species has knock on effects across the entire ecosystem.

Modern wildfires burn far hotter and deeper than natural low intensity fires. They can kill wildlife, scorch soils, and destroy root systems and seed banks, leaving habitats struggling to recover.

Sites like Landguard face higher wildfire risk simply because theyโ€™re open to the public. Most fires begin with human behaviour.

๐Ÿ”ฅWhy Small Actions Matter ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As you enjoy the outdoors, please take a moment to think about the impact of every choice. A single cigarette butt, a smoldering BBQ, sparks from a fire, or glass thrown into vegetation can turn into an emergency in seconds.

๐Ÿšซ No BBQs (including disposable)
๐Ÿšซ No bonfires
๐Ÿšซ No gas stoves
๐Ÿšซ No littering (including ci******es)

Some risks simply arenโ€™t worth taking.

A wildfire at Landguard wouldnโ€™t just devastate wildlife and their fragile habitats โ€“ it could also threaten nearby homes, disrupt lives, and impact local livelihoods and businesses.
