The DfE's Education Estates Strategy is a 10-year, Β£38 billion plan for England's schools and there's quite a lot in it about outdoor spaces, if you haven't already read it!
From a new 'garden schools' design standard for all rebuilt schools, to Β£3.7 billion for SEND provision and new guidance on inclusive outdoor environments and inclusion bases due this year, school outdoor spaces are more central to the conversation than they've ever been.
We've broken it all down in one place π

Multi Gyms: Versatile Play with Real Impact
Multi gym equipment is a powerful addition to any playground. Combining multiple activities into one engaging space.
Designed to keep children active and motivated, multi gyms support the development of strength, coordination, and overall wellbeing, while encouraging pupils to stay active.
By offering a variety of physical challenges in one structure, they maximise space and create opportunities for inclusive, social play.

Thameside Primary School in Reading introduced a new Additional Resourced Provision unit and needed a playground that worked for every child in it.
With SEN ARP Resource Capital funding from the Local Authority, they built a fully inclusive outdoor space covering climbing, a sunken trampoline, birds nest swing, bouldering wall and a MUGA, all on wetpour safety surfacing.
The outcomes since? Previously disengaged pupils now choosing to be outside. Better regulation. Increased physical confidence. Real friendships forming at playtime.

We've been designing, manufacturing and installing top quality playground for over 35 years, a lot has changed in that time.
How schools think about outdoor provision
What inclusion looks like in practice
The role playgrounds play in children's wellbeing and development.
The conversations we're having with school leaders today look very different to the ones we were having when we started out.
But the things we care about haven't shifted.
β
Quality materials that holds up year after year, whatever the weather
β
Equipment built to be used and last
β
Playgrounds with purpose behind every design decision
β
Safety that's never an afterthought
β
Inclusive spaces designed for all children to play alongside each other
Over 28,000 play spaces and 11 million children later, those are still the things that drive every project we take on.

πΏ Outdoor Classroom Day β Thursday 21st May πΏ
This Outdoor Classroom Day, schools across the UK are celebrating the power of learning and playing outdoors.
Outdoor spaces are extensions of the classroom, supporting creativity, focus, wellbeing, and active learning. Whether itβs structured lessons outside or free play at breaktime, time outdoors plays a vital role in childrenβs development.
At Fawns we love helping schools create spaces that bring learning and play together.
If your school is exploring ways to make outdoor learning even more effective, itβs always worth considering how the space is being used day to day. Why not contact us today to discuss your project https://www.fawns.co.uk/contact

SATs are over. The sun is coming out. Now's the time to get them outside! π€οΈ
The weeks after a high pressure point (and after half terms) are often when emotional regulation challenges are most visible. Especially during the summer term where the structure lifts a little and some pupils struggle with the shift.
We've written all about how outdoor environments support children's emotional regulation, and what purposeful outdoor provision actually looks like for schools supporting SEMH needs π
