Altiero Spinelli. A father of the European project. He joined the Communist Party in Italy when he was 17 years old and in 1927 was imprisoned for 16 years by the Fascist regime for his activities. Upon his release he started the federalist movement in Italy, convinced that the only way to defeat right-wing nationalism that had torn the continent apart was to Unite Europe. He served as an Italian MP and then as an MEP. His vision lives on!
