PRIDE OR SHAME: ROBERT TOMBS on ENGLAND'S HISTORY
Is England's history something to be proud of, or ashamed of? Alistair McConnachie reads Robert Tombs, author of "The English and Their History" and co-author with Nigel Biggar of the new "Our Islands' Story", on why accepting responsibility beats both pride and shame, and why the empire mattered less to Britain's wealth than we're often told.

THE DOGGER BANK INCIDENT
On the early hours of this day 22 October in 1904, the "Dogger Bank Incident" when the Russian Baltic Fleet fired on British fishing boats out of Hull, mistaking them for Torpedo Boats of the Japanese Imperial Navy!

The Russo-Japanese War (8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905) was a conflict over ambitions of both parties in Manchuria and Korea. At the time, Britain was allied with Japan as part of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance which lasted from 1902 to 1923.

There had been rumours of the Japanese Navy in the North Sea, and these appeared to have caused considerable anxiety and confusion among the Baltic Fleet.

Even though Russian searchlights lit up the fishing boats, the firing continued. The Russians even ended up shooting at each other. Their Cruisers 'Aurora' and 'Dmitrii Donskoi' were bombarded by their own battleships, killing two sailors. The battleship 'Oryol' reportedly fired over 500 shells without hitting anything!

Three British fishermen were killed and a memorial was erected in Hull, in 1906 to their memory.

During this conflict and the subsequent World Wars, the Japanese fleet never entered the North Sea or the Baltic Sea, but it defeated the Russian Baltic Fleet at the Battle of Tsushima in May 1905.

SNP's MHAIRI HUNTER BLAMES the HOME OFFICE: BUT DOES SHE REALLY WANT TO STOP THE BOATS?
SNP councillor Mhairi Hunter says Glasgow's homeless refugee crisis is "due entirely to the Home Office". Alistair McConnachie agrees, then asks the obvious follow-up: if the SNP wants to blame Westminster, how would they stop the boats? And do they actually want to turn off the tap?

Tonight our guest is friend of the Show, author Will Podmore, who will be discussing his new book "Working for Britain" and whether he believes the new Prime Minister has the ability to re-industrialise our country. We'll be looking at the SNP Conference last weekend, and the claim that Scotland is "a colony". We'll also be reporting on our Street Stall in Glasgow. And 'On This Day in British History', we'll be looking at the Battle of Trafalgar.

THE ABERFAN DISASTER
At 9.15am, 60 years ago, on Friday 21 October 1966, a coal bing collapsed into Pantglas Junior School and the surrounding houses in Aberfan, south Wales.

116 children (mainly between the ages of 7-10) and 28 adults were killed.

It had been the last day of school before the half-term break.

The tip had been built over a natural spring. A stream ran under the tip itself, and heavy rainfall had triggered the movement of the slag.

The official report found the National Coal Board responsible, "not of wickedness, but of ignorance, ineptitude and a failure of communications."

The Aberfan Memorial Garden now stands on the site of the school.

JOHN DOIG, SCOTS LAD, YOUNGEST SAILOR at TRAFALGAR
On this day, 21 October 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar which ensured Britannia was to Rule the Waves for more than 100 years!

The youngest sailor in the fleet, 10-year old "powder monkey", John Doig was born in Leith; which is the district of Edinburgh where the Royal Yacht Britannia is moored today.

Here is a section of the famous painting, 'The Death of Nelson' by Daniel Maclise (Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool). Perhaps we can imagine that this is John Doig...doing his duty...amid the drama!

And in his bare feet!

Simple accidents due to that alone must have kept the doctors on board busy. In that regard:

SURGEONS
Many of the doctors were from Scotland. Tim Clayton, the author of 'Trafalgar: The Men, The Battle, The Storm' has said that "the majority of the surgeons on the ships were in fact Scottish." (1)

HOW MANY SAILORS WERE THERE?
The figures quoted here are from an article (2) which itself summarises the "Ayshford Trafalgar Roll" (3), which is one of the most extensive pieces of research on the men who fought for Britain at Trafalgar.

According to this article, there were more than 18,000 men who served in the British fleet, of whom nearly 1,300 came from Scotland, around 4,000 from Ireland, around 500 from Wales, and 7,000 from England.

OTHER CONNECTIONS WITH SCOTLAND
Physically, as far as the ships were concerned, many of the fleet's Sails and Ropes would be made in the Jute mills of Dundee.

The very large Cannons in the fleet, called "Carronades", were made in the Carron Iron Works in Falkirk.

And the Cannonballs came from the Bonawe Iron Furnace in Argyll, which was the first place in Britain to put up a monument to Nelson, which still stands today.

TRAFALGAR DAY, BRITAIN RULES THE WAVES FOR 100 YEARS!
On this day, 21 October in 1805, the Battle of Trafalgar when the Royal Navy, led by Admiral Lord Nelson, decisively beat the combined fleets of France and Spain – which ensured British Dominion of the Seas for at least a century. Nelson was to be hit by a sniper's bullet and die on his Flagship, Victory.

This is a section of the famous painting, 'The Death of Nelson' by Daniel Maclise, which is on display at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. A sailor in the background points to the direction from which the sniper fired.
