Report of a person with an ankle injury at Blue Pool

Rhossili Coastguard Rescue Team and Oxwich Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked following a report of a person with an ankle injury on the beach at Blue Pool.

The Rhossili team arrived on scene, located the casualty and began providing casualty care. It quickly became apparent that the injury was serious and that further support was needed to treat the casualty and transport them from the beach. A rescue helicopter was therefore requested.

The rescue helicopter from Newquay was tasked to the incident, along with Tenby Lifeboats RNLI. Once the helicopter arrived, the winchman paramedic took over the casualty’s care, provided pain relief and prepared them to be airlifted to the waiting ambulance at the entrance to Broughton Caravan Park. The Oxwich team had established a helicopter landing site there. The casualty was then transferred to the Welsh Ambulance Service and taken to hospital.

The teams would like to wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

As always, in a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

⚠️ MET OFFICE YELLOW WEATHER WARNING FOR WALES ⚠️

The Met Office yellow weather warning comes into force at midnight as Storm Austen moves across South Wales. Winds of 50–60 mph are forecast, with gusts of up to 70 mph possible in some coastal areas.

Please take extra care if you are visiting the coastline during this period:
• Keep well back from cliff edges during high winds.
• Avoid standing beneath cliffs because loose material and debris may fall.
• Keep away from the shoreline, as large waves and dangerous conditions are expected.

The warning remains in place until 5:00pm tomorrow. Strong winds are expected to continue over the weekend, so please take care and stay safe if you are near the coast.
In a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Storm Austen is set to bring disruptive wind and rain ⚠️

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind across parts of southern England and Wales for Friday 23 October.

Gusts could reach 50-60mph, and coastal and exposed areas could see 70mph or more.

Stay safe at the coast:

• Stay away from cliff edges as sudden gusts can cause you to lose balance

• Avoid standing directly beneath cliffs as rocks and debris can fall

• Keep back from the shoreline and look out for large breaking waves

Visit the HM Coastguard website for more advice on staying safe at the coast.

If you see someone in difficulty at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Never drive through flood water 🚗

Just 30cm (1ft) of moving water can be enough to float a car.

If a road is flooded, don’t risk it. Turn around and find another route. The water could be deeper and faster flowing than you realise.

If you get stuck in flood water by the coast or see someone in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Stuck in the mud? 🥾

Mud can quickly become dangerous, especially near open water and when the tide is rising.

Check local warnings signs before setting off and avoid walking across muddy areas, as hidden channels of fast-flowing water can be difficult to spot.

If you become stuck:

• Sit back and spread your weight evenly across the surface

• Tell others not to attempt a rescue, as they could become stuck too

• Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard

Found something unusual on the beach?

Although rare, it could be unexploded ordnance.

Stormy seas, bad weather and high tides can uncover objects that have been hidden for many years.

Ordnance can come in many shapes and sizes, so if you spot something you’re unsure about, don’t touch or move it.

Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. We’ll work with the relevant authorities to make the area safe and ensure the object is dealt with correctly.
