Thanks to a series of milder winters, wrens are currently the country's most numerous bird. And yet they are not often seen. No bigger than a mouse, they move as fast and, for a bird, they stay comparatively low to the ground - one could say they skulk. Their characteristic round shape, with its small c**ked tail, is well camouflaged in chestnut brown and grey so it can be hard to spot them. But between February and July their presence is obvious from their startlingly bright song, which rivals in volume, if not in sweetness, that of much larger birds. They punch above their weight, these little chaps!
