BE-ST Fest headed north to Inverness yesterday, spotlighting key issues shaping the built environment across the Highlands and North of Scotland.

Clean heat, energy efficiency, infrastructure, skills and the transition from ambition to delivery were all central to the conversation, with plenty of insight into the challenges and opportunities facing communities across the region.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the programme, including our speakers, workshop hosts, exhibitors and partners and everyone who came along and took part in the day.

It was fantastic to see the work already happening across the region and hear from the people driving it forward.

📍Next stop: BE-ST Fest West in Glasgow on 4 November, where we’ll continue the conversation. Link to purchase your FREE ticket available now in our bio.

What if learning about energy-efficient buildings felt more like playing a game? 🎮

As part of his master’s degree and placement with BE-ST, Cameron has been working with our team to test a game he developed to support the built environment sector. Players use different elements to make buildings more energy efficient while learning about sustainable design along the way.

Recently, Cameron invited the team to try out the game at our offices, gathering valuable feedback to help shape and improve the user experience.

Cameron said, “My master’s project uses Serious Games (the study and creation of games designed to teach or expose the player to a concept or subject area through game experiences) to teach and engage the player in net-zero construction and Passivhaus concepts and thinking.

I hope my research demonstrates the potential of Serious Games and gamified learning for education within the built environment sector to help engage those already in the industry, and possibly inspire those who are not as aware of the science behind the built environment, and to learn more about the subject as I have.”

To mark Scottish Apprenticeship Week, we’re delivering specialist low-carbon training to 140+ apprentices and pre-apprentices across Glasgow and Dumfries & Galloway.

We’re delivering bespoke, hands-on sessions for apprentices from City Building and Mears in Glasgow, as well as pre-apprentices at Dumfries and Galloway College, through two BE-ST programmes: Introductions to Building Physics Dynamics and Low Carbon Passport.

Apprentices from carpentry & joinery, plumbing & heating, painting & decorating, and electrical trades are taking part to build the skills Scotland needs for its low-carbon future.

BE-ST is proud to have collaborated with .uk and partners on the launch of the Milestone range of bus shelters in Basildon, Essex, marking the most significant innovation in UK bus shelter design in decades.

Made with FSC Douglas fir timber, low-carbon concrete and glass, these shelters achieve around 70% lower CO₂e than legacy designs and feature Living Roofs, solar-powered lighting, priority seating and NaviLens codes to enhance accessibility.

Bauer Media Outdoor UK collaborated with Innovate UK to form a consortium comprising BE-ST, Edinburgh Napier University, Ecosystems Technologies, and Highland Heritage Woodworks, along with Vertical Meadow, to develop a new timber design and supply chain tailored to the needs of bus shelters and council partners.
