Music for My Mind A UK-based charity working to improve the lives of families affected by dementia through music. We all have a soundtrack to our lives.

For many years it has been known that familiar music has a very positive effect on people. It can make us join in by singing along, tapping our feet or moving our hands, smiling or even dancing. Music allows us to go back in time and remember personal memories from years ago. Our aim is to help people living with dementia identify what their favourite music is. Technology developments have made this possible with the use of emotion monitors and artificial intelligence software.

Today is Young Onset Dementia Awareness Day, shining a light on dementia that affects people earlier in life.

Dementia brings challenges at any age, but a diagnosis before 65 can bring additional challenges around diagnosis, support, work and family life.

At Music for My Mind, we believe everyone living with dementia should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of personalised music.

💜 Let’s raise awareness, encourage connection and help make music part of dementia support for everyone who needs it.

More than half of us know someone affected by dementia. Could you help make a difference?

53% of the UK population know someone affected by dementia. Behind that statistic are people, families and friends navigating the challenges dementia can bring.

Music can spark precious memories and help people living with dementia feel connected to those they love. At Music for My Mind, we want everyone living with dementia to have access to personalised music, wherever they live and whatever care they receive.

Your donation could help us bring the benefits of music to more people living with dementia. Please donate today and help us make more moments of music, connection and joy possible.

💚 Dementia must be a national research priority.

The Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has spoken movingly about losing his father to dementia and his determination to help drive progress towards defeating the disease. His commitment to making the UK a world leader in dementia research offers real hope of accelerating the breakthroughs that could transform lives.

We welcome this ambition for dementia research and hope it helps bring us closer to a future where everyone affected by dementia has access to the care, support and advances they deserve.

At Music for My Mind, we’re also committed to making a difference to people living with dementia, by making personalised playlists easily accessible and by doing research to better understand the ways in which music helps, when embedded as part of dementia care.

The Prime Minister, whose father Roy died last month after suffering from Alzheimer’s, said he wanted Britain ‘to be the country that makes the breakthrough’

“That was my husband – loving your company, loving the music and, momentarily, becoming himself again.” 🧡

For Mo, seeing her husband Wally join in during a Music for My Mind session was a very special moment. "Listening to music was always an important part of his, and our, life so it will be no surprise to you when I say that it also released a lot of marvellous memories for me!”

Hearing songs from his personalised playlist brought back memories, connection and glimpses of the Wally she knew.

Personalised playlists are created around the music that has meaning for each person – the songs they grew up with, danced to, sang along with and loved.

For someone living with dementia, familiar music can help create these moments of connection and recognition, and, as Mo discovered, can bring precious memories back for their loved ones too.

Thanks to Wally and Mo, and Anson Court Quantum Care Ltd.

Could music help you reconnect with your mum, dad, grandparent, partner, or another loved one living with dementia? 🧡

For Gill, having a real moment of connection with her mum had become something she hadn’t experienced for years. Sheila has advanced dementia and had barely spoken to or engaged with her daughter for around four or five years. Through music they were able to reconnect.

If conversation has become difficult, music is another way to connect. Music carries memories and emotions that remain, even as dementia progresses. Creating a personalised playlist is more than choosing favourite songs, it can be about finding a way back to a loved one – sharing a song, singing together, or simply being connected for a moment.

Find out how Music for My Mind can help you create a personalised playlist filled with the music that matters to someone you love. 🎶

💬 “The difference is it’s her music, not my music. It’s what she likes, and that is what’s making the difference.” - Coni, Care Home
Manager.

Music is personal, and so are our playlists.

The songs that mean something to us can unlock memories, bring moments of joy and create connection – which is why choosing music that matters to the individual is so important. And time after time, we see
this personal music bringing back the joy and spirit in people, that dementia tries to take away. 🎶

With Music for my Mind, families and care homes can create personalised playlists based on the music and life experiences of each
person.

🎵 The impact of personalised music can go far beyond simply listening to a favourite song.

Feedback from one care home shows how a personalised playlist has become an important part of everyday life for one resident living with dementia.

Before receiving her playlist, she was experiencing high levels of anxiety and was often reluctant to participate in activities or spend time with other residents.

Now, staff see her singing along to her favourite songs, recognising them from the opening notes and becoming more engaged with those around her.

They say music has helped provide:

💙 Familiarity and comfort
🎶 Structure within her day
🤝 Opportunities for connection
😊 Moments of happiness and engagement
🌟 Support when the world feels overwhelming

This is the power of making music personal.

Music for My Mind creates free personalised playlists for people living with dementia, using the music that is meaningful to them.
