A long night for some of the team, heading out 23:45 and returning to station at 06:45!

Thankfully a positive outcome later in the day.

Great effort by all involved with some great multi agency working!

🚨Multi Agency Search 🚨

Many of you have been asking about the Coastguard helicopter and the emergency services activity around Whitby overnight and again today, so we wanted to share a brief update.

Shortly before midnight, our team was tasked with colleagues from Staithes, Ravenscar and Scarborough following reports of a missing person believed to be in the area.

A large multi-agency search continued throughout the night, including both lifeboats from Whitby RNLI lifeboat and Scarborough and Coastguard helicopter 912. Teams were stood down shortly after daybreak for some much needed rest.

It wasn’t for long, though, as we were asked to resume the search later this morning. Daylight gave us better visibility and, once again, it was a real multi agency effort, with Mountain Rescue and the police helicopter also involved.

After several more hours, the missing person was safely located by search teams and passed into the care of the ambulance service.

We’re pleased to report that this had a safe outcome. Thank you to every team and agency who worked through the night and into the next day.

This incident is one of many, that require a multi agency response, quietly being undertaken in early hours by both full time emergency services and volunteers and workers who give their own time around their day jobs and families.

For everyone’s privacy, we won’t be sharing any further details.

If you see or feel someone is in trouble along our coastline, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Summer Season Wrap-Up: Team Reflections and an Attendance Request!

After a busy summer, the team gathered on station this evening for a catch-up and to reflect on the last couple of months, during which the team has attended 46 incidents.

We’ve recently started a memory jar on station, with team members adding memories and moments from their time in the Coastguard — whether they’re funny, sad, memorable or something we’ve learned from. 🤔

This evening, we took the opportunity to pick out a few and discuss them as a team. It was a great chance to reflect on some of the experiences we’ve shared and the lessons we’ve taken from them.
Some certainly gave us a laugh! 🤣

We also had a brief operational update before enjoying a relaxed “non-uniform” evening and spending some time together away from the usual operational environment.

As we were about to start some board games, the team’s phones began to chime and, as is often the case with Coastguard life, the evening quickly transitioned into an operational response.📟

The team quickly changed, packed the equipment and responded to an incident alongside Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team

Thankfully, the incident was resolved quickly and the team have now returned safely to station.

Our Station Officer and Deputy Station Officer would like to thank the whole team for their continued efforts, dedication and professionalism over the past few months.

The commitment and support shown by the team makes our roles a lot easier, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they do. 👏🏻

Staithes Coastguard Rescue Team, together with the wider Coastguard community, sends our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the tragic incident on the A66 in the early hours of this morning.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues of those who have died, and with our colleagues at Cleveland Police following the tragic deaths of two serving officers.

A devastating incident that will be felt across our communities and by all those involved in the emergency response.

Just as most of the team were getting off to sleep last night, we received an attendance request from our Operations Room. 📟

The team quickly gathered at station and deployed to the incident. Fortunately, the incident was resolved swiftly and we were soon back at station.

With the pace slowed down, we noticed something unusual in the station… a thank you card! ❤️

The card was from a couple we had assisted recently.

Whilst we certainly don’t do this for recognition, small gestures like this really do help keep our spirits up… especially when we’ve just jumped out of bed! 😴😂

Many thanks to the people who sent us the card. It was very much appreciated, and we hope you’re both well. ❤️

A busy few days!

After a quieter-than-usual start to August for the team, the last few days have certainly made up for it!

Following eight days with no incidents, last Tuesday marked the start of a particularly busy spell. We have just returned from our 8th incident since Tuesday. 📟

Today’s incident was a timely reminder of the importance of staying well clear of the base of cliffs and away from cliff edges.

At 14:34, the team were tasked to assess a rockfall at Huntcliff, Saltburn. As team members arrived and began providing safety advice to members of the public, a further, larger fall occurred.

Thankfully, on this occasion, no one was injured.

Alongside the incidents, team members have also remained busy supporting Staithes and Runswick RNLI Lifeboat Station

On Friday, we escorted the Nightgown Parade — always entertaining to see the lifeboat crew in their best attire! 😬

On Saturday, team members were around the harbour, showcasing our equipment and chatting with members of the public.

Today, some of the team were also out cheering on the famous Duck Race — an exciting event, and we hear it was Daffy who took first place! 🦆🏆

A huge thank you to all our Coastguard Rescue Officers who continue to give up their time to attend incidents, train, and support events in our community.

Fancy being part of the team? Be quick!
Our Recruitment window closes on 20th August!!!

Business Continuity Plan!

Did you know?

One of the functions of the mast located on top of Boulby is to transmit radio communications along the coast and out into the North Sea.📡

These communications can be between our Coastguard Operations Room, Coastguard Rescue Teams, fishing vessels and even the cargo vessels regularly seen off our coast.

Staithes CRT are one of just a handful of teams equipped with a portable, deployable mast.

In the event that the Boulby mast is out of service, our team can be tasked to deploy the portable mast and monitor communications. One of its vital roles would be listening for the international distress call “Mayday”.

Due to the terrain across our operating area, communication between search teams can often be difficult. The portable mast can also be deployed during incidents to enhance radio communications and improve coverage.

Tonight, team members from Staithes Coastguard, Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team and Whitby Coastguard were joined by the Area Commander for a familiarisation session on the deployable mast and its capabilities.

Before the session, Staithes and Redcar had just returned from two incidents in quick succession — thankfully, both with positive outcomes. 🙏🏻

Another valuable evening of training, helping ensure we’re ready to respond when we’re needed. 🚨🌊

What to be part of the team??

📟 Latest Incident Update📟

July was our busiest month of the year so far, with the team responding to 25 incidents.

From persons in the water and medical emergencies to rope rescues, helicopter landing site management and searches for lost and missing people, our volunteers have been ready to respond whenever the bleeps have sounded. 📟

But it’s not just about responding to incidents. Behind every callout are hours of commitment, with the team continuing to train every week, completing our monthly Operational Readiness Checks (ORCS), and recently welcoming members of the public to our recruitment open evening.

These 25 incidents bring our total to 85 incidents so far this year. Throughout the year we’ve worked closely with our neighbouring teams at Redcar Coastguard Rescue Team and Whitby Coastguard, Staithes and Runswick RNLI Lifeboat Station and many other emergency service partners to help keep our coastline and communities safe.

💙 Could you be part of the team?

Our recruitment window is still open. If you’re looking for a rewarding challenge, enjoy working as part of a close-knit team, and want to make a real difference in your local community, we’d love to hear from you.
