It's nearly time for half term and then Halloween!
Join us for creepy crafts throughout the two-week holiday, where we'll be making spooky things like this haunted house.

The craft sessions will be on these dates, all at 10:30-11:30am:
Wednesday 21st
Saturday 24th
Wednesday 28th
and on Halloween itself (Sat 31st) we'll have a special Ghost Storytime, with a craft afterwards!

Every session will have a different craft, so you can come to as many as you like!

The cost is £2 per child, to cover materials
The recommended age is 4+ but younger children may be able to participate with additional help from parents, and older children will enjoy them too

Our series of BookTrust Storytime sessions is starting THIS SATURDAY!

17th October, 2:30-3:30pm
FREE and no need to book ahead

At each session, we will read two stories together, and then do crafts and activities based on the theme of the books. This Saturday's session is themed around 'Forests and Woods' and we'll be reading the award-nominated "Squish!" and the absolute classic "The Gruffalo"
These Storytimes are aimed at ages 0-5, and are perfect for helping develop listening and language skills - as well as simply sharing stories together and having fun!

These sessions are completely free and perfect if you and your child have never been to the library or read much before, though avid readers will love them too!
Recommended for ages 0-5, but older siblings are welcome as well

October half term is almost here, and you all know what that means...
Plenty of fun and frights at the library!

We've got plenty going on over this two week long half term: from our always-popular David Shepherd Wildlife Workshop (this time about African Painted Dogs) to a Spooky Sketches drawing workshop and an extra-special Ghost Stories storytime.

Find out more about all the events on our events page via the link in the comments below (or see the posters/leaflets at the library)

Please note that the Maths Sorcerer and Wildlife workshops need to be booked in advance! They are both free and can fill up very quickly, so make sure to reserve your place soon
All other events don't require booking, just come along!

And as usual, we will also have a treasure hunt, colouring, and a Halloween scene on our board for children to contribute to.

It was absolutely lovely to hear Sir Ian Rankin's lovely Scottish lilt on BBC Radio 2 this morning, talking about not only his first standalone thriller in two decades entitled "The Heights", but also The National Year of Reading, which Surrey Libraries has been promoting all year, AND the BBC's writing competition for children, 500 Words - now taking entries.

If you are a Rankin fan, we have plenty on our shelves here at Horley Library and over 350 Rankin items on the Surrey Libraries catalogue so there's oodles to choose from. His new thriller, The Heights is "coming soon" and already has a whole load of reservations against it so we recommend getting on the list soon! ,

Meet our beloved library spokesman Pebble the Penguin, who's taking over our social media today to spread the word about our donations box, conveniently located on the Help Desk! 🐧📚 This little box may be small, but it makes a BIG impact on the services we provide to our community. Any spare change you can contribute - coins or notes, big or small - helps Surrey Libraries deliver valuable services to all communities right across Surrey. From children's storytime to author talks, and from book clubs to digital skills training, your donations support it all! 📖 Whenever a customer drops some coins into the box, we are always overwhelmed with gratitude for their kindness and generosity. ❤️

As an organisation, Surrey County Council believe that everyone should have access to free period products and that everyone deserves dignity, period.

Through a partnership with the charity Binti International, Horley Library is one of 48 libraries in Surrey where you can collect free period products. We have a donation box and collection trays in our toilet - please take what you need, you don't need to ask. And we are always very grateful for donations of unopened boxes of period products so thank you in advance for those.
