One of the things Knowsley foster carers say they value most is knowing they're never on their own.

When you foster with Knowsley Council, you have a dedicated supervising social worker in your corner – someone who knows you, visits you regularly, and is there to celebrate the good moments as well as help you through the difficult ones. You're also part of a wider network that includes the child's social worker, education professionals, health services and more.

There's no agency in the middle. Just direct, local support from people who are invested in you and the child in your care.

To hear more about what that support looks like in practice, have a watch of episode seven of the Foster4 podcast, where Rachel, Fostering Team Manager at Knowsley Council, explains it all in her own words. You'll find a link to the episode in the comments ⬇️

If you already foster with an independent agency, you might not have thought about making the move to your local authority. But for some carers, it turns out to be one of the best decisions they've made.

The differences between fostering with an independent agency and fostering directly with your local council aren't always obvious at first – but they can matter a great deal in practice. From being closer to the professionals around the child in your care, to the ethical considerations behind who you choose to foster with, there's more to think about than many people realise.

Jayne, a Knowsley foster carer who transferred from an independent agency, made that move – and hasn't looked back. "From the day we moved, I've always been really happy," she says.

To hear Jayne and Sally talk honestly about their experience, have a watch of episode ten of the Foster4 podcast. It's a genuinely useful listen for anyone currently fostering or thinking about who to foster with. You'll find it from the link in the comments below ⬇️

Caring for a child who has experienced trauma can be one of the most rewarding things you'll ever do. But it can also be tiring, emotionally challenging, and sometimes confusing – even when you're doing everything right.

Children who have been through difficult experiences can sometimes respond in ways that are hard to understand. That's not a reflection on you as a carer. And it doesn't mean you're on your own.

Foster4 provides therapeutic support to all newly approved foster carers, to help them feel confident, well-equipped, and looked after. It's OK to feel frustrated sometimes. It's OK to feel exhausted. What matters is knowing that support is there when you need it.

To hear more about this, have a watch of episode six of the Foster4 podcast, where Therapeutic Practitioner Mel talks honestly about what the support involves and why it makes such a difference. You'll find a link in the comments below ⬇️

❓ Have you considered a career as a foster carer?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Every day, foster carers provide safe and loving homes for children of all ages who, for a variety of reasons, are not able to live with their own family for a period of time.

🏠 Being a foster carer is home-based, flexible and a self-employed role that utilises your skills to make a positive impact on the lives of children and young people.

✅ In return, you will receive a generous allowance, training, support, access to discounts, events and much more!

Foster carers in Knowsley say that "fostering is very enjoyable, helping young people to succeed in what they want to do", "fostering is fulfilling and you make a difference" and "the best thing about fostering is seeing the difference you make to a child’s life."

Fostering can sometimes feel like a lonely role – but it doesn't have to be. The Mockingbird programme, run by The Fostering Network, is designed to create a real sense of community among foster carers and the children in their care.

It works by bringing together a small group of foster families into a "constellation", supported by an experienced Hub Home Carer. Think of it a bit like an extended family – people who understand what you're going through, who can offer practical help, and who create a sense of belonging for everyone involved, including the children.

The programme is available to foster carers in Knowsley, and the difference it makes to people's experience of fostering can be really significant.

To hear more about what Mockingbird is actually like day to day, have a watch of episode nine of the Foster4 podcast, where Hub Home Carer Craig and Satellite Carer Marie share their experience - the link to all the episodes in the comments ⬇️

What's it really like growing up in a fostering family?

For children already living at home, the idea of their parents becoming foster carers can raise a lot of questions. But for many families, it becomes one of the best decisions they ever made together.

In Episode 1 of Foster4's podcast series, Let's Chat About Fostering, we meet Nathan, who grew up as a foster sibling. He talks about what it was like when his parents first brought up the idea, the bonds he's formed along the way, and why he now wants to become a foster carer himself one day. His story is a reminder that fostering doesn't just change the life of the child who comes to stay – it can enrich the whole family.

If you'd like to hear more about what life as a fostering family is really like, episode one of the Foster4 podcast is well worth a watch or listen. Nathan tells his story in his own words – and it's a really uplifting listen. Follow the link in the comments to see and hear for yourself 👇

You don't have to wait until your children have grown up before you can become a foster carer. Many brilliant foster carers already have children at home – and it works.

One of the most common things people wonder is how fostering fits around an existing family. How do you have that conversation with your kids? How does everyone adjust? The honest answer is that it can take time – but for many families, it becomes something they are all proud to be part of.

Vicky became a foster carer while raising her own children. In episode 2 of Foster4's Podcast, Let's Chat About Fostering, she shares her family's experience openly – including how their household grew from four to seven people (eight, including Chester the dog!).

If you'd like to hear how fostering works for families just like yours, why not have a watch or listen to her story? You'll find the link in the comments ⬇️

When you start your fostering journey, one of the first steps is a home visit from a member of the fostering team. It's natural to feel a little nervous about this – you might worry about being judged, or feel like your home needs to be perfect.

The reality is quite different. The visit isn't an inspection. It's simply a chance for the team to get to know you, understand your household, and talk through any worries you might have. Your home doesn't need to be spotless, and your past doesn't need to be perfect either.

In Episode 4 of the Foster4 Podcast, Rachel, Fostering Team Manager at Knowsley Council, explains what the visit is really for and what you can realistically expect. If you've had any concerns about this stage of the process, her reassurance might be just what you need to hear.

For a closer look at what the initial home visit involves, have a listen to this episode – Rachel walks through the whole thing in a calm and straightforward way. You'll find a link to the podcast in the comments below ⬇️
