Tanzania's President John Magufuli never left Africa on a single state visit in his 6 years as President.

He visited only 8 African countries — Rwanda (twice), Uganda (three times), Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Namibia.

While other African leaders flew to Europe, America, and Asia for state trips, Magufuli stayed on the continent — and made it a policy. He banned foreign travel for all government officials in his first week in office. The government saved $430 million in just one year from that single decision.

His message was clear: African leaders meeting African leaders is not a lesser form of diplomacy. It is the work.

Love him or criticize him, that posture was deliberate — and rare.
