Action 4 Hallam Fields Change for the better I'm Kate Fennelly and reside next to Hallam Fields ward. My father Paul owned the garage on Nottingham Road.

I've lived in Ilkeston all my life except the time I served in the RAF when I returned 12yrs later. "The Vauxhall Viva Centre" in its early days, now "The Nottingham Road Garage". I'm a self employed driving instructor of 16yrs, mother of a disabled child and all too aware of the challenges parents face. I am also a commonwealth War Grave volunteer, Long Eaton Sea Cadet Instructor and a member of the RBL Ilkeston branch helping our community.

🇬🇧 WORKING TOGETHER FOR DERBYSHIRE’S VETERANS 🇬🇧

Today Kate attended the Derbyshire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership Meeting in Matlock, discussing veterans’ concerns and how we can work together to improve support across our county.

Kate heard from a range of speakers, covering social housing, housing options, mental health, Op VALOUR, Op NOVA and the important role of Armed Forces Champions.

These discussions build on the work Kate and fellow partners have been doing in Erewash and across Derbyshire, helping veterans access support and bringing organisations together so people don’t have to navigate everything alone.

As an RAF veteran herself, Kate knows how important it is to have someone who listens, understands and helps you take that next step. 💙

There was so much to cover, including the work of SSAFA Derbyshire, Royal British Legion - Derbyshire, Derby and Derbyshire Disabled Soldiers Settlement, STAND TO and other charities, foundations and support workers, that one post simply wouldn’t do everyone justice.

Over the next week, Kate will share individual posts highlighting these organisations and the support available. Making people aware of where to turn is an important part of the Armed Forces Champion role.

Thank you to the speakers, organisers and everyone working to support our Armed Forces community.

Our commitment to fellow veterans continues long after we take off the uniform.

📍 Hallam Fields – has anyone else noticed a terrible smell?

We will be contacting our Environmental Health team tomorrow to raise this and request an urgent investigation.

If you’ve noticed it too, please comment below or message me with:

• Your road/street.
• When you noticed it and how long it lasted.
• What the smell was like.

We are unsure what’s causing it, but this needs immediate attention.

Your feedback will help establish how widespread the problem is. We will keep residents updated once we have had a response.

🌺 Volunteers needed for Remembrance Sunday 8th November 🌺

Councillor Kate Fennelly will be in London this year, marching with the RAF Regiment, while Councillor Mark Alfrey will represent Erewash at Sawley as we take turns in this role.

We’re looking for volunteers to help decorate our reusable wreaths and lay them at the Remembrance services in Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
Kate and Mark refuse to throw wreaths away when they can be used again! ♻️🌺

There is also an opportunity to join Mark at Sawley.

The Armed Forces Champion role is important to Erewash.
It would be lovely to give others the opportunity to lay a wreath on behalf of our community, honouring those who served and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

This is open to all ages veterans, cadets and residents alike. ❤️

Our local councillors will support anyone who would like to take part, and younger volunteers are welcome to have a parent accompany them.
Please be aware photos will be taken and media will be posting information.

Another evening out in Hallam Fields, speaking with residents about concerns in their neighbourhood and across Erewash.

Councillor Mark Alfrey and I will be following up on the matters raised over the next few days:

🌳 More tree concerns and lack of maintenance by DCC.

🚨 A pension concern from a member of the blue light services, which Kate will discuss with her veteran DWP specialist.

🕳️ A pothole claim submitted to DCC last Christmas that remains pending and unpaid. We will be chasing this up.

🌧️ Flooding linked to blocked drains. We have a handful of FS reference numbers to work through.

🪑 A broken bench that no one seems to own a good one to investigate!

🏠 A question about insulation and keeping warm over winter from a resident on a low income. Kate will research what support is available. As she always says, you’re never too old to learn!

🥰 There was also lovely feedback for Adam Thompson MP.
Two residents sang his praises for helping them over the past year.
One felt he receives far too much abuse on social media. I said that, unfortunately, it can come with the role, but her response made me pause: “People are human, whatever their role.” I promised to share that in my post. ❤️

😓 One resident wasn’t a fan of Adam, and that’s fair enough not everyone will agree with or like us.

🚪Only one door slammed in my face and one “get lost” tonight! 🥴

Unfortunately, that sometimes comes with the role too, but the warm welcome and positive feedback from so many residents more than made up for it.

Kate was recognised as the “Pothole Queen” and the “Lorax Queen” again she must get a photo done! 😂👑🌳

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with us, and to the team for coming out on a chilly, windy evening.

We certainly got our steps in tonight! ✊
