π Road Safety Update β Harford Road, Cole Lane & Wood Park π
Following repeated concerns raised by residents, officers conducted patrols this morning in and around Harford Road, Cole Lane, Wood Park and the surrounding area, with a particular focus on the 20mph zone.
Firstly, we would like to thank the many residents who stopped to speak with us. The support shown by the local community was greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, what we witnessed was concerning.
It quickly became apparent that a significant number of motorists were failing to adhere to the 20mph speed limit on Harford Road. During the morning period, it is estimated that the majority of vehicles observed were travelling in excess of the posted speed limit.
Before the inevitable comments arrive, we would also like to address a common assumption.
This is not solely a college student issue.
Those observed included a wide range of road users, including parents, carers, taxi drivers, mini buses, and other motorists. In fact, some of the drivers and passengers observed may surprise those who assume responsibility lies with one particular group.
Officers also spent time engaging with young people in and around Wood Park, issuing words of advice regarding parking, road safety and anti-social behaviour where appropriate.
The message is simple:
π« 20mph is not optional.
π« 20mph is not a target to exceed.
β
20mph means 20mph.
The level of non-compliance witnessed this morning was not acceptable.
As a result, work in this area will continue and will be increasing in the coming weeks. This will include a combination of education, engagement, intelligence gathering, speed monitoring and, where appropriate, enforcement activity.
Those motorists who believe the 20mph limit does not apply to them may receive a wake-up call in the very near future.
One of our priorities is, and always will be, the safety of all road users, particularly in areas heavily used by pedestrians, families and young people.
Thank you to everyone who continues to report concerns and support our efforts to make Ivybridge's roads safer for all. π
