🕯️ It's Candle Fire Safety Week.

This fire, caused by a wax melt, was attended by Earlham Red Watch last year.

As the evenings get darker and many of us enjoy lighting candles to make our homes feel cosy, it's important to use them safely. A few simple precautions can help ensure your candles remain a nice addition to your home and don't become the cause of a fire.

🔥 Keep lit candles well away from curtains, furniture and other flammable materials, and always place them on a heat-resistant surface.
🔥 Never leave a candle burning when you leave the room, leave the house, or go to sleep.
🔥 Don't leave children or pets unattended around lit candles.
🔥 Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
🔥 Avoid burning several candles too close together, as this can cause them to flare up.

Did you see the One Show story about the switchover of landlines on Wednesday night?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0032w8z/the-one-show-14102026

If you have a TV licence, you can watch it here. The story runs from 01:55 to 07:16.

It's worth remembering that the problems the person in the article experienced with their care alarm could probably have been avoided if they had switched to a digital alarm. Digital alarms don't need a landline. Over 90% of our customers have already switched to a digital alarm and we're on track to reach 100% by January.

If you still have a care alarm plugged into a BT wall socket, or the phone port on the back of your router, it's time to get it upgraded. Call us on 01553 616200 to make the switch.

Can we talk about falls detection?

Like most providers of care alarms, our care alarm pendants can be supplied with falls detection enabled. An accelerometer in the pendant, paired with some software, can detect most hard falls, followed by a period of inactivity, and trigger the alarm to call our monitoring centre automatically.

They're not perfect though. If you break your fall, by leaning on some furniture, or move the pendant after you've fallen, the alarm may not trigger. You should ALWAYS press the button on the pendant in an emergency if you can.

Falls detection pendants particularly suit people who have blackouts or seizures, who are therefore unable to press the button. For everyone else, a regular pushbutton pendant is usually the best solution, as it prevents false alarms and is more reliable. Unlike some private providers, we won't "upsell" you a pendant with falls detection. It's not an upgrade - it's an alternative for those that need it.

False alarms, sometimes caused by sudden arm movements, aren't a problem for our monitoring centre - we encourage alarm users to test their pendants once a month anyway - but many people think they are being a "bother" by triggering their alarm by accident. It's not a bother to us, but if you wear a pendant with falls detection and it goes off too often, or not at all, we can adjust its sensitivity. Just give us a call or press the button to speak to the monitoring centre.
