Our Curator, Sarah, recently shared this remarkable 1830s writing case belonging to Colonel Sir Charles Chichester. Inside, it holds a personal collection of items that tell the story of an eventful military life, including his whistle inscribed 'C.C.', letters, newspaper clippings, a button from his time in the 60th and 81st regiments, and even locks of hair from his children.
Colonel Sir Charles Chichester served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 81st Regiment and Brigadier General in the British Auxiliary Legion in Spain. He commanded at the capture of Irun in 1837 before passing away in Toronto in 1847.
It is wonderful to take a closer look at these preserved personal pieces cared for by the Burton Constable Foundation.
