LIFEBOAT LOVERS ... IT'S STORY TIME!
175 years ago the number of lives being lost at sea around our coasts was rising considerably.
There was believed to be 784 lives lost from 681 shipwrecks. It was this statistic that sparked a competition to find the best self-righting lifeboat design, sponsored by the 4th Duke of Northumberland.
Even today, in rough seas and treacherous waves, volunteer crews depend on their lifeboats to keep them safe while out on a rescue, which is why all our all-weather lifeboats are self-righting. This means they can bring themselves the right way up if the powerful elements cause them to capsize.
Did you know this lifesaving design came from a COMPETITION?!
James Beeching, who owned three successful boatyards throughout his life, entered the 4th Duke of Northumberland's competition with his self-righting lifeboat design, and WON against 280 entries from around the world!
The lifeboat he designed, named the Northumberland, was stationed at Ramsgate, Kent for 14 years 😲
