🎄 TOMBOLA DONATIONS NEEDED! 🎁

A big thank you to everyone who has already offered to support our Christmas tombola! 💚

We're still looking for donations of prizes for the Swillington Christmas Lights & Market 🎆🎇 on Saturday 14 November, at Swillington Sports and Social Club.

Every donation, big or small, helps us make the event even better for the community.

If you can donate, or know a local business that might be able to help, please get in touch with Ian at [email protected].

Thank you for supporting our village events — and please share to help us reach more people! 🎅🎄

💷 Just under 75% of the Council's expected income this year comes from the precept - the money raised through local council tax. That means the majority of the money we spend comes directly from our local community.

We're at the halfway point in the financial year and want to show how we're putting that money back into Swillington through improvements to village facilities, support for community activities and the services that help keep our village running.

💚 So far this year, a significant proportion of our spending has gone directly into improving village facilities, alongside the staffing and services that help keep our village running.

There's plenty more to come over the next few months! 🎄 From our Christmas lights and seasonal community events to more footpath maintenance now we're out of nesting season, we'll continue working on projects and improvements that make a difference to Swillington.

This is also the time of year where we start to think about our plans and our budget for next year. If you would like to be involved in making decisions on where Council money is spent in Swillington, please consider applying for one of our two councillor vacancies - contact [email protected] for more information.

🏘️ WE NEED TWO NEW COUNCILLORS! 🙋

Swillington Village Council has two vacancies, and we're looking for local people who would like to play a part in shaping the future of our village.

🤝 Support community groups, facilities and events
💷 Help decide how Council money is spent

You don't need to have been a councillor before, and you don't need to be an expert in local government. What matters is an interest in Swillington and a willingness to get involved. Full training and support are available.

🙋 Could you be a councillor?

If you'd like to find out more, get in touch at [email protected]. We'd be happy to have a chat about what's involved, with no obligation.

🤝 Working together across our local communities

Last month, our Chair attended an event hosted by the Lord Mayor of Leeds Cllr Stephen Holroyd, providing a great opportunity to meet with councillors from neighbouring parish and village councils.

These conversations have helped strengthen local links and opened up discussions about how our councils can work together on projects and local services that benefit our communities. Those conversations are ongoing, and we're looking forward to seeing where they lead.

🏘️ Is there something happening in a neighbouring village that you'd love to see in Swillington?

We'd love to hear your ideas - let us know in the comments.

The event was also an opportunity to meet the Lord Mayor and hear about the local charities he's championing this year: Mesmac and St Gemma's Hospice 💚

Swillington Village Council will be helping to raise funds for these charities early next year, so keep an eye on our page for more details.

Here's a quick look at some of the things discussed at the Council's October meeting:

🌳 Playground - repairs authorised to the inclusive roundabout

📚 Little Library - on closer inspection the two little libraries are irreparable; they are being replaced with one larger library thanks to the generosity of Oakley’s Roofing - it is expected to be reinstated this month

🚶 Footpath 26 - following some unfortunate vandalism to the fence protecting walkers from the drop into the beck, we're continuing to liaise with the city council's waterways team to get the beck cleared of the debris and will be supporting the Public Rights of Way team in writing to the landowner regarding replacing the fencing

🎃 Community events - preparations are underway for our Little Cinema - Halloween, as well as planning for the Little Cinema - Christmas and Swillington Christmas Lights & Market 🎆🎇

🎄 Christmas lights - the Council will have a stall at the switch-on event on Saturday 14th November with a tombola to help raise funds towards next year's lights. Donations of unwanted gifts, chocolates, toiletries and other prizes are welcome over the next few weeks.

💚 Community support - a £200 grant was approved for the Swillington Elderberries group towards their Christmas celebration and essential food hampers.

🌱 Allotments - work to improve drainage on the access track to one of the council allotment sites is progressing, with an updated quotation expected this month.

🏘️ Planning - the Council discussed the planning application for 8 supported living accommodations at the former Swillington Clinic on Hillcrest Close and agreed to submit a response to Leeds City Council.

📅 The next Council meeting will be on Tuesday 3rd November.

📝 Full draft minutes are available on our website.

🙋 Could you be a councillor? We currently have two vacancies on the Village Council and are looking for local people who would like to get involved and have a say in decisions like these that affect our village.
