Today, Firefighters from Eastern Station will remember our colleague Bob Miller who tragically died in the line of duty.

Bob sadly died on 31st October 2002 whilst he was searching for people within a fire at a disused hosiery factory in Morledge Street in Leicester city centre.

There is a large red memorial plaque on Morledge Street and a miniature in the main mess area at Eastern alongside photos of Bob and FF Martin "Spud" murphy who sadly died in an accident alongside his daughter the following July.

Both red plaques were provided by the FBU.

📱This week is international control room week.
Where we recognise the amazing and often unsung work of our awesome control room staff.

📞They are the voice you hear when you call 999 and will send the appropriate response to the emergency call.

🔥Yet again it has been a challenging summer for all but these men and women somehow make it work and get the fire appliances to the incident.

🚒Our new firefighters are often given advice of years gone by never upset the three Cs, cook, cleaner and CONTROL. A very good piece of advice for any new firefighter.

👍From everyone at Eastern thank you for all the work you do behind the scenes.

Well, we cannot agree more with this post.
As a station and especially our incident commanders on the station.
We cannot say a big enough thank you to the farmers in Leicestershire for their help this summer.

They were able to provide huge fire breaks and large amounts of additional water at critical times during incidents and without them we could not have dealt with a number of those incidents successfully.

An open letter from our Service to the local farming and rural communities for their support during this summer's wildfires:

Following the exceptional wildfire conditions we experienced this summer, we have recently been holding our internal debriefs within Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service. These have given us an opportunity to reflect on what went well, what we can learn, and how we can prepare ourselves for the future. One message has come through particularly strongly, and it is one that I want to acknowledge publicly.

We could not have achieved the outcomes we did without the extraordinary support of our farming and rural communities.

Our firefighters worked exceptionally hard, often in extremely difficult conditions, to contain fires and protect people, property, livestock and our countryside. But this was very much a shared effort.

Time and again, farmers, landowners and members of our rural communities stepped forward to help us. You brought tractors, machinery and bowsers. You ploughed fields and created firebreaks to help stop fires spreading. You moved water to places where conventional fire service access was difficult.

You helped transport equipment and personnel across challenging terrain. You shared your knowledge of the land and, importantly, when we needed help, you were willing to provide it.

That practical assistance made a real difference.

Our debriefs have reinforced just how important that contribution was. While other parts of the country sadly experienced serious consequences from wildfires this summer, including the loss of homes, across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland we were fortunate to avoid injuries and significant property loss during the incidents we faced.

The recent Government Wildfire Summit followed after a summer in which England and Wales experienced more than 1,100 wildfires by mid-August, demonstrating just how significant the challenge has become nationally.

I am extremely proud of the work of our firefighters, our Fire Control colleagues and everyone across the Service who supported these incidents.

But it is equally important that we recognise that we did not do it alone. The actions of our farming community were not simply helpful additions to the firefighting operation. In many cases, they formed an important part of our ability to contain fires, restrict their spread and bring incidents under control.

Today, as Government, fire and rescue services and partners come together nationally to consider the UK's future resilience to wildfire, it seems particularly fitting that we recognise what happened here locally. One of the clearest lessons for me is that resilience is not something that any single organisation can provide. It comes from communities, public services, businesses and individuals working together.

Our farming and rural communities demonstrated that brilliantly this summer.

On behalf of everyone at Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, and personally as Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, I therefore want to say a sincere thank you.

Thank you for your equipment.

Thank you for your expertise.

Thank you for your local knowledge.

Thank you for your time, often given while you were managing the pressures and risks to your own land, crops, livestock and livelihoods.

And, above all, thank you for standing alongside our firefighters when your community needed you.

Wildfire is an increasing challenge for fire and rescue services and for the communities we serve. National work is already highlighting the importance of land management, emergency access, water availability, firebreaks and closer working between land managers and Fire and Rescue Services. Our experience this summer has demonstrated the value of that partnership very clearly.

We will take the lessons from this summer forward and continue working with our farming and rural communities to strengthen our collective preparedness for future periods of extreme wildfire risk.

For now, however, I simply want to recognise what you did.

The excellent outcomes we achieved this summer belong not just to Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, but to everyone who stood alongside us and helped protect our communities.

You have our respect, our appreciation and our sincere thanks.

Yours sincerely,

Callum Faint

🟢Eastern Green Watch had a busy couple of nights on shift this weekend.

🔥On Saturday night we attended a house fire with persons reported inside. Our first appliance was mobilised to the incident by our control room at 00:05hrs and 39 seconds, we were in attendance at 00:10hrs and 3 seconds and had a Breathing Apparatus team through the door at 00:11hrs.

🚒That is 5 minutes and 21 seconds from rolling out the doors on station to making entry to the house. The result - One male casualty rescued from the property by the Breathing Apparatus team and the fire extinguished shortly afterwards.

👥Other residents who managed to self-evacuate prior to our arrival were alerted to the fire by working smoke alarms, correctly fitted and maintained within the property.

🚒On Sunday night, we attended two Road Traffic Collisions. For the first one, crews extricated one male casualty and handed him to East Midlands Ambulance Service for further care.
We then winched the car clear of the doorway, allowing access and egress for the residents of the affected property.

🚒For the second road traffic collision, we again extricated one male casualty and made both vehicles safe.

👍Thanks to the local residents for their patience whilst we dealt with these 3 incidents.
Key lessons:
Inside - Smoke alarms save lives & when travelling - Seatbelts save lives.

🚪 It’s National Fire Door Safety Week! 🔥

Fire doors might look like ordinary doors, but they play a vital role in protecting lives and property.

When correctly fitted, maintained and kept closed, fire doors are designed to resist the spread of fire and smoke for a specified period of time. This helps protect escape routes, limits fire spread and gives people valuable extra time to get to safety.

This week is a great opportunity to give fire doors the attention they deserve. Take a moment to remember:

🚪 Never wedge or prop fire doors open unless they are fitted with an approved automatic hold-open device.

🔍 Check they close properly, a self-closing fire door should close fully into the frame without sticking or being obstructed.

🛠️ Look out for damage - damaged doors, frames, hinges, glazing, seals or self-closing devices should be reported.

📦 Keep them clear - don't place objects in the doorway that could prevent the door from closing.

👀 Check the gaps - excessive gaps around a fire door can affect its ability to contain fire and smoke.

🔥 Don't tamper with fire doors - alterations such as drilling holes, removing closers or damaging seals can compromise their performance.

🏢 Fire doors help create compartments within buildings, slowing the movement of fire and smoke and helping to protect escape routes.

Remember:

A fire door can only do its job when it can close properly.

This National Fire Door Safety Week, take a few seconds to notice the fire doors around you. If something doesn't look right, report it. Those few seconds could help save lives. 🚒

Fire Door Safety Week aims to spread the message of the importance of fire doors in saving lives and protecting property. Become a supporter today.

🟢Second RTC of the set for Green Watch came in the early hours of this morning and a slightly different approach required, due to the car having rolled over.

🚒This time the windscreen was removed along with the A Post. Then crews used a ram to relocate the roof to allow extrication.

🚒This was in very close proximity to the station, and we wanted to thank our local residents for helping the driver before our arrival.

🚗Remember, seat belts save lives! .... and certainly reduced the potential injuries caused by the car rolling over.

👨‍🚒From our raised position in the fire engine, we do unfortunately see some people driving around without seatbelts, including some children not in the appropriate car seats.

🙏Ensure you adhere to the laws and make yourself and those you are responsible for safe within vehicles

🚒It was a busy day for Eastern Station yesterday. In the morning we carried out breathing apparatus training in a basement scenario. Then we worked alongside Central Station to test whether our risk plans are accurate for a tall building in town- simulating a rising main failure.

🚗In the afternoon crews attended a road traffic collision with a car on its side. We removed the tailgate for access to the casualty, before folding the roof down to allow for full extriction.

💧 We also attended a flooding incident affecting two flats, isolating the electrics and water, carrying out salvage work and requesting the Red Cross to assist in setting the tenants off in the right direction on the road to recovery.

🔥In the evening we carried out an exercise at the Highcross testing breathing apparatus procedures again, alongside Billesdon Station.

As we aporoach the 25th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Leicestershire firefighters have taken part in a memorial event of climbing 110 floors alongside firefighters from around the world.

The event was held at Truist Stadium Atlanta Braves and hosted by Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services

343 firefighters were killed that day responding to world trade centre site and 600 firefighters have died of illness related to rescue & recovery work.

All the crews are raising money as part of the event. If your able to help please do even if its only a £1

Through this mission, we aim to raise vital funds for three incredible charities that provide life-changing support to emergency service personnel and their families:

The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund – supporting firefighters and families in times of need across the United States.

The Fire Fighters Charity – helping UK firefighters and their loved ones recover, rebuild, and thrive through physical, mental, and social support.

The Blue Light Card Foundation – championing the wellbeing of the entire Blue Light community, including emergency services, NHS, social care, and armed forces personnel.
