Growing up in a fostering family isn't something that’s often shared.

For Ella, fostering became part of everyday life. From helping with homework and sharing family dinners to navigating difficult goodbyes, she experienced first-hand what it means to welcome children into your family and help them feel they belong.

One lesson has stayed with her ever since:

"There's always more to the story."

Living alongside children with very different life experiences taught her to look beyond behaviour, listen without judgement and understand that every child deserves to feel seen, heard and valued.

These reflections are taken from Ella's experience of growing up in a fostering family over the past nine years.

🏆 Meet our Courageous Family

We couldn't be prouder of Compass foster parents Foxy and Dez Guile and their family, winners of the Courageous Family Award at the Child of Wales Awards 2026. ❤️

And this really is an award for the whole family.
Also pictured is Damien, who first became part of their family when he was seven. Now 19, he continues to live with Foxy and Dez through a When I’m Ready arrangement.

It's a wonderful example of something we believe strongly at Compass: fostering isn't simply about providing a home. It's about creating relationships, trust and a sense of belonging that can last long into the future.

Hellen Taylor, Head of Fostering at Compass Fostering Wales, said:
“Foxy and Dez have created something incredibly special, but this award really belongs to the whole family. Together, they have created a place where children and young people can feel safe, accepted and part of a family.
“We are immensely proud to have them as Compass foster parents.”

Sometimes supporting a young person's mental health happens in the smallest of moments. 💚

Staying curious when behaviour is difficult. Making space for big feelings. Finding moments of playfulness. Showing empathy. Letting a child know you're still there.

These are all things that can sit at the heart of therapeutic parenting and PACE approach: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy.

This World Mental Health Day, we're recognising the foster parents creating safety, connection and understanding in those everyday moments.

Because the little moments matter too.

More than 20 years later, Shirley has supported children from a wide range of backgrounds, helped young people achieve incredible things, and even inspired her daughter to become a foster parent too.

From challenging assumptions to championing children’s potential, Shirley’s story is a powerful reminder of the lasting difference one person can make.
