As It’s National Adoption Week, our social workers want to highlight some of the great books out there that can be helpful for those thinking about adoption, and those who are raising adopted children.

are a wonderful series of stories for children, written by an adoption therapist. Aimed at children aged 4-9 covering a range of topics, our favourites include “Rainbow Remembering” which talks about it being OK to love your foster family as well as your adoptive family, and “Nina and the No-Nos” which is a story for children who struggle to not be in control. We also love “Heartlines” which is a sweet story about how love grows between a child and parent.

is an adoptive mum who has written lots of books for children. Lots of our social workers have used “Delly Duck” with children they are working with – it’s a really great tool! Holly has also written books for big brothers and sisters, and those who are becoming cousins to a new adopted child – ideal for those in the process of adopting to gift to family and friends to prepare other children in the network. “Cousins by Adoption” is a great resource to share.

is a biological mum and adoptive mum, and her memoir “Adopting After a Biological Child” is one that we always recommend when we meet prospective adopters who have a birth child (or two!), and are thinking of adopting to expand their family. It’s a realistic, humourful and very honest account of the ups and downs of adopting alongside a pre-existing child, and one that is really worth a read!

Our social workers find that reading the experiences of others is a real help for those thinking about adopting, or who are being assessed. has written a great book called “Our Beautiful Chaos” sharing her experience of adopting a sibling pair of two girls, followed by a third child a couple of years later, and it’s one of our favourites. Adopting three kids isn’t for the faint-hearted, but even those considering adopting just one child can learn a lot from Rachael’s experiences. Our social workers often recommend this book when we are meeting new families.

This National Adoption Week is a particularly special one for adopters Ikki and Zac, who are celebrating as dads for the first time ❤️

Since welcoming their son Riley home, they've experienced all the joys, challenges and learning that come with adoption – and have loved watching their family of three grow together 🏡

💚 You don’t have to do it alone.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re thinking about the emotional wellbeing of everyone touched by adoption - children, adopters and prospective adopters.

Adoption can bring incredible moments of connection, belonging and joy. It can also bring questions, uncertainty and challenges, particularly as children and families adjust and build relationships.

That’s why support matters.

For prospective adopters, we’re here to help you understand the emotional side of adoption and prepare for the journey ahead.

For our adopters, support doesn’t simply stop when an adoption is made. We’re here to listen, offer guidance and help you access the right support when you need it.

And for children, we want every child to have adults around them who listen, understand their feelings and help them feel safe, valued and heard.

Asking for support isn’t a sign that you’re struggling to cope. Sometimes, it’s simply part of building a family where everyone feels loved, supported, and able to thrive.

Whatever stage of the adoption journey you’re at, you don’t have to navigate it alone. 💚

Would you like to welcome a child into your home? Join us for an online information event to learn more about fostering and adoption

Recognising that the path to having a family isn’t straightforward for LGBTQ+ people, we want to help you explore the options available to you and bust a few myths. Every child deserves a safe and loving home. Could you be the one to give them this? Hear from your local not-for-profit fostering service, and Adoption South East, who will be happy to answer all of your questions…

Adoption South East (adoptionsoutheast.org.uk) is a partnership of councils from East Sussex, West Sussex, Brighton & Hove, and Surrey working to make the adoption process quicker and simpler. We have a wealth of expertise in bringing together children with safe, secure, loving and permanent adoptive families.

West Sussex County Council (fosteringwestsussex.org.uk)
Brighton and Hove City Council (brighton-hove.gov.uk/foster)
East Sussex County Council (eastsussex.gov.uk/fostering)

Across Sussex, children who are unable to live with their birth family need foster carers to provide love, care and compassion to help give them the best possible start in life. This could be on a short- or long-term basis and carers receive training, support and competitive pay to help every child achieve their potential.

The event will feature short presentations from our experts, with an opportunity afterwards to join the breakout room of your choice, where you can speak to adoptive parents, or hear first-hand from local foster carers.

We hope you can join us!

Christina & Ed adopted their daughter Jasmine when she was just 4
years old.

For their family, it's the everyday moments that mean the most -
from Jasmine's first smile each morning to the final "love you" before
bed ❤️

Adoption is about creating a place where a child can feel loved and
secure - not just today, but every day 🏠
