Dogs need to be under control around livestock including horses. The updated law is now extended to tracks and pathways too. It's an offence not to have your dog(s) under control. What does this mean? Being on the beach while your dog (regardless of how friendly it is) is on the footpath above does not demonstrate control. Having your dog(s) running yards in front of you unleashed does not demonstrate control...(it's my worst nightmare as my dog is so reactive due to being attacked several times by dogs of leads). Please be mindful that other people use the trails who maybe afraid of dogs (yes plenty of people are), or have reactive dogs, or are riding horses (the area is also a bridleway). If you see horses the best advice is to leash your dog regardless of how well behaved they are, then we can ensure we're all safe. Horse riders for the most part wear body cams (as advised by British Horse Society ) and will be able to provide evidence of any encounters with dogs that have put them or their horses in danger. The law is clear. Please be responsible and respectful. Our animals' safety is our responsibility!

What New Livestock Worrying Law Means for Land Managers and Dog Owners The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) (Amendment) Act 2025 comes into force on 18 March 2026, bringing stronger penalties, new police powers, and a wider definition of livestock worrying.
