2 calls to paddle boarders in difficulty, 1 swimmer in difficulty, a casualty with a broken ankle and a medical incident just out side the station whilst we were training.

Whether you’re new to kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, or heading out regularly, make sure you’re prepared before getting out on the water.

Before you go, check you have:

Personal flotation device – to help keep you afloat if you enter the water 🦺

Fully charged mobile phone – kept in a waterproof pouch so you can call for help 📱

Personal locator beacon – useful if you lose mobile signal 📍

Equipment labels – label your paddleboard, kayak and other watersports kit, so the Coastguard can check you’re safe if it’s found 🏷️

In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

In June the team attended 9 incidents along the coast.
These comprised of missing person searches, suspected ordnance, paddle boarders in difficulty, persons cut off by tide and a motorbike and rider stuck on steep slope.

Today we recognise and celebrate Jamie Jenkins on receiving his 20 Year Long Service Award with Llantwit Major Coastguard.

Over the past two decades, Jamie has dedicated countless hours to helping those in danger around our coastline, attending numerous callouts and supporting members of the public in their time of need. Throughout his service he has held the roles of both Station Officer and Deputy Station Officer, showing outstanding leadership, commitment and professionalism.

Jamie is also a valued member of the Area Flood Team, responding to flooding incidents across the UK and helping communities during some of their most difficult times.

Beyond operational duties, Jamie plays a huge part in organising and planning training sessions, as well as charity events that continue to support and strengthen the local community.

An invaluable member of the team, Jamie’s dedication, experience and selfless service over the last 20 years is greatly appreciated by everyone who has had the privilege to work alongside him.

Congratulations Jamie, and thank you for your incredible service and commitment.

3 missing persons searches.
2 casualties with broken ankles that needed treatment and evacuation by stretcher.
1 attendance at Newport dock for casualty that had fallen from height on a vessel.
