Statement from Dr Chris McGurk:

Dear friends,

Yesterday’s election result did not go the way I had hoped, and I am disappointed.

It was a privilege to meet and speak with so many residents of Eltham Town and Avery Hill during the campaign. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you to everyone who supported me. Thank you to all the volunteers who came door-knocking and leafleting; we were a great team. Thank you David, our campaign manager, for his boundless hard work and motivation, and Peter, my agent, for all his efforts. Thank you Clive Efford MP, for spending so much time on the doorstep with me. And thank you to our fantastic Labour councillor, Lauren Dingsdale, who I know will continue to work tirelessly for our ward.

I also want to thank the other candidates and extend my congratulations to Charlie Davis. I wish Charlie all the best in his work representing the ward.

Our Labour council has a progressive, exciting vision for our borough. From the Greenwich Builds scheme for new housing, to the Carbon Neutral Plan, to the new Children and Young People’s Plan, there is a lot of promise, and a lot of work yet to do.

Eltham Town and Avery Hill is a wonderful place and I look forward to sharing in its bright future.

Chris

Out and about in Eltham this weekend, speaking to residents and also admiring Eltham Palace, a fantastic local landmark. Not long until 17th October now, so I am encouraging everyone to make sure they get out and vote.

Helping out at the Parkrun 20th anniversary edition of the Greenwich parkrun in Avery Hill Park. Who'd have thought, 20 years ago, that a small group of runners getting together would lead to such a huge, international community event? Congrats on your 20th birthday, parkrun UK.

Fantastic turnout for canvassing last night. It was great to speak with so many local people. Something many residents are reporting is issues with the Avery Hill Road/Footscray Road traffic lights, so I have raised this with TfL. Looking forward to meeting more residents this weekend.

Today we (Cllr Lauren and Dr Chris) visited the Trussell's food bank in Avery Hill and learned more about the fantastic work that the volunteers do there to support the community.

Then we visited Eltham CoE Primary to speak to the headteacher, Mr Wills, about how the council could improve road safety for children outside the school gates, a vital issue.

Finally, we went door-knocking in the evening. A busy and rewarding day.
