Congratulations Wing Commander Muir

Wing Commander (Designate) Justin Muir appointed Officer Commanding Surrey Wing

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Wing Commander (Designate) Justin Muir as Officer Commanding Surrey Wing, Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC), effective from 1 January 2027.

Justin succeeds Wing Commander John Machin DL, who has successfully led Surrey Wing for the last nine years. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to John, and his wife June, for the leadership and huge personal commitment shown to Surrey Wing during his tenure. Leading one of RAFAC’s Wings is a significant responsibility, and I am immensely grateful for the dedication shown to our cadets and volunteers.

Justin’s RAF Air Cadet journey began in 2016 when his son joined 1349 (Woking) Squadron and Justin joined to support as a Civilian Instructor. He was commissioned in 2017, became Officer in Charge in 2018 and took Command of 1349 Squadron in April 2019. He commanded the squadron successfully for seven years, which included winning the Surrey Wing Pennant three times and being nominated as the London and South East Region (LaSER) representative for the Lees Trophy in 2024. Always keen on shooting and fieldcraft, Justin became the Surrey Wing Military Skills Officer in 2025.

Throughout his service, Justin has demonstrated a strong commitment to developing volunteers and cadets to ensure that each individual gains the most from the organisation and that every cadet can gain the skills and personal development experiences that will help them become successful adult life. Justin’s professional and RAF Air Cadets experience, collaborative leadership style and knowledge and contacts across Surrey Wing, make him exceptionally well placed to lead the Wing into its next exciting chapter.

Please join me in congratulating Wing Commander (Designate) Justin Muir on his appointment. I wish him every success as he prepares to assume command of Surrey Wing.

I look forward to working with all the teams across the Wing and LaSER as we continue to ensure that we offer exceptional learning and developmental opportunities for our cadets.”

During half term Surrey Wing completed a highly successful Operation Surrey Wing Shooting Competition held at Sennybridge Training Area (SENTA). The event brought together cadets from across the Wing for three days of challenging, rewarding and enjoyable marksmanship training and competition, showcasing the dedication and skill of the participants.

Throughout the competition, cadets demonstrated exceptional commitment to developing their shooting abilities, with many achieving significant personal milestones. A particular highlight was the achievement of 19 cadets earning their Silver Shot Badge, recognising their proficiency and hard work on the range. Furthermore, three cadets were able to convert their Silver Shot qualification into a Gold Shot Badge, having previously completed the Fundamentals of Coaching Course, demonstrating both personal competence and their ability to support and develop others.

In addition to the live firing programme at SENTA, cadets were given the opportunity to visit the Dismounted Close Combat Trainer (DCCT) facilities at the Infantry Battle School, Dering Lines, Brecon. The afternoon enabled the cadets to use this DCCT technology to understand what improvements they could make to their shooting skills. The camp also visited Rogiet Moor Range, which offered cadets a unique shooting environment and spectacular views across the Prince of Wales Bridge and the Severn Estuary. The location provided an excellent backdrop for training and further enhanced what was already an outstanding week.

The competition concluded with an awards ceremony recognising both excellence and determination. Trophies and medals were presented to the highest-performing cadets, including:
• Overall Competition Winner – CWO Sinclair 323 Sqn
• Second Place – Cdt Gordon 1034 Sqn
• Third Place – Cpl Parmigiani-Donkin W 1349 Sqn
• Best Effort Award - Cdt Gordon 1034 Sqn
• Most Improved Award - Cdt Krysiak 323 Sqn

The awards reflected not only competitive success but also the resilience, determination and personal development demonstrated by all participants throughout the week.

Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their time to make this happen.

REGION COMPETITIONS DAY

Congratulations to our winning teams at yesterday's London & South East Region Air Cadets Competitions Day.

National Cadets Week - Celebrating our Team

As National Cadets week draws to a close, we want to celebrate the collective team that make up Surrey Wing. Cadets and Adult Volunteers all put in great effort to making our organisation what it is today. Thank you all for your part in our success.

SKILLS FOR LIFE

Being a cadet gives you skills that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Self-discipline, confidence and teamworking skills are gained through everything we do. As you progress leadership and management skills come out; imagine leading a team of your peers as a teenager.

There is something for everyone with the RAF Air Cadets as part of our progressive training syllabus. Learn how to fly, maybe even get your "wings". Go on adventurous training such as paddle boarding or expeditions. This could lead to gaining your Duke of Edinburgh Award.

There are also military skills training, learn marksmanship skills or how to camouflage yourself in the field. Maybe you are more musical, well we have opportunities to join bands up to national level, playing in big events such as the Lord Mayor's Show in London.

We also now offer a comprehensive syllabus related to space and cyber, leading to nationally recognised qualifications. The latest addition being flying drones, with opportunities to get CAA recognised qualifications.

NATIONAL CADETS WEEK - DAY 5

The last of the themed days for National Cadets Week is one of the most impactful. The Cadet Forces do provide Skills for Life.

The training provided by the RAF Air Cadets provides the leadership, management and teamworking skills everyone needs to progress whatever career they choose.

Add to that the more specialised skills cadets and volunteers can develop around cyber, aviation, adventure training and most recently drones.

We will share more of what is on offer later today.

CADETS SAVE LIVES

First Aid is a skill we provide to every cadet and volunteer. Most cadets will achieve their Essential First Aid (blue) badge within the first 6 months of joining us. This qualification is also mandatory for all Adult Volunteers.

Cadets can then go on to achieve more advanced St John Ambulance awards. First the Youth First Aid and for older cadets the Activity First Aid course. Activity First Aid is offered to all adult volunteers, especially those with adventure training qualifications.

Both cadets and adult volunteers can go on to achieve the qualifications needed to become a qualified first aid instructor; allowing them to pass on their knowledge to younger cadets.

Our squadrons regularly put on first aid exercises with simulated casualties to help keep cadets' first aid skills up to date. There is even an annual first aid competition.

With trained cadets and volunteers you know you are always in safe hands.

NATIONAL CADETS WEEK - DAY 4

Today's theme for National Cadets Week is "Cadets Save Lives".
First Aid is one of the core life skills we teach our cadets and volunteers. Every member of the RAF Air Cadets completes an Essential First Aid Course covering the key skills of CPR and basic first aid.
