Ο Πρέσβης Γιάννης Τσαούσης υποδέχθηκε χθες στην Πρεσβευτική Κατοικία μέλη του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου του Ithaca Birmingham - Ελληνικός Πολιτιστικός Σύλλογος Μπέρμινγχαμ "Ιθάκη"(𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙀𝙣𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝, 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡 𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣)

Κατά την επίσκεψη τους τα μέλη του Συλλόγου ξεναγήθηκαν στη μόνιμη έκθεση " Γιώργος Σεφέρης: Ο Άνθρωπος, ο Ποιητής, ο Διπλωμάτης" που φιλοξενείται στην Πρεσβευτική Κατοικία.

Στη διάρκεια της συνάντησης συζητήθηκαν πρωτοβουλίες και δράσεις για την προώθηση του ελληνικού πολιτισμού, της γλώσσας και των παραδόσεων στο Birmingham και στην ευρύτερη περιοχή των West Midlands, oι οποίες συμβάλλουν στη διατήρηση της ελληνικής πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς και την ενίσχυση των δεσμών της ομογένειας με την Ελλάδα.

Ambassador Yannis Tsaousis warmly welcomed yesterday to the Hellenic Residence in London board members of the Greek Cultural Society of Birmingham “Ithaca”.

During the visit they were shown around the Embassy’s permanent exhibition on George Seferis.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss initiatives promoting Greek culture, language and traditions in Birmingham and across the wider West Middlands region, while strengthening ties with the Greek Diaspora.

📌 Commemorating the 85th Anniversary of the at the UK Parliament 🇬🇷🇬🇧

A poignant evening at the 🇬🇧 House of Commons last Tuesday, organised by the Embassy to mark the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Crete (20 May 1941) — a defining moment of WWII, and a lasting symbol of the enduring bonds between Greece, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Deeply honoured that the Speaker of the UK House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, opened the commemorative event, alongside the First Vice-President of the Hellenic Parliament, Mr Γιάννης Πλακιωτάκης - Giannis Plakiotakis, UK Ministry of Defence Minister Lord Vernon Coaker, APPG Greece Chair Mr Alberto Costa MP, and Ms Caro Howell MBE, Director General of the Imperial War Museums, with 🇬🇷 Ambassador Yannis Tsaousis delivering the closing remarks.

Together we paid tribute to the bravery and shared sacrifice of the Greek, British and ANZAC 🇦🇺🇳🇿 forces, and the Cretan civilians who fought and fell in Crete during May–June 1941. Then, as on many occasions throughout history, Greece and the United Kingdom stood side by side in defence of freedom and shared values — a legacy that continues to live on in the enduring friendship and close partnership between our nations 85 years on.

It was a privilege to be joined by veteran families, alongside the Australian High Commission in the United Kingdom HC, Jay Weatherill AO, distinguished guests from 🇬🇷 Greece and Crete, 🇬🇧 the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth, including members of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, Ambassadors, High Commissioners and representatives of the diplomatic community in the UK, and the Greek diaspora.

The event also featured a small exhibition of Battle of Crete artefacts and photographs from the 🇬🇷 Πολεμικό Μουσείο, the 🇬🇧 Imperial War Museums, and private collections.

We are deeply grateful to Sir Lindsay Hoyle for the honour of holding this event at the Speaker’s House, and to all our distinguished speakers.

📌 Strong Greek Presence at the London Wine Fair 2026

Ambassador Yannis Tsaousis visited yesterday the 🇬🇷 Pavilion at the London Wine Fair, showcasing Greece’s rich winemaking heritage, exceptional indigenous grape varieties and wine-producing regions, while highlighting the ever-growing appeal of Greek wine in the UK 🇬🇧 and beyond.

📍 Greece is strongly represented at this year’s fair, taking place at Olympia London from 18–20 May, with the 4th largest national pavilion at the exhibition.

During his visit, the Ambassador had the opportunity to meet and exchange views with Greek exhibitors.

🍇 This year’s Greek participation includes 34 exhibitors, with 30 wineries hosted at the national pavilion, alongside the Regions of Thessaly, Central Macedonia and Crete. The Greek presence has been organised by RECO Exports, with the support of EnterpriseGreece, the participating Regions and Wines of Greece.

Σήμερα, η καρδιά του Ελληνισμού χτυπά στον περήφανο ρυθμό της λύρας. Με αφορμή την Ημέρα Μνήμης για τη Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων του Πόντου, ανατρέχουμε με συγκίνηση σε ένα από τα πιο τραγικά κεφάλαια της σύγχρονης ιστορίας: τη συστηματική εξόντωση 353.000 συμπατριωτών μας.

112 χρόνια έχουν περάσει από τότε που ξεκίνησαν οι διωγμοί, οι εκτελέσεις, οι «πορείες θανάτου» στα βάθη της Ανατολίας, τα καταναγκαστικά τάγματα εργασίας, η μεταφορά αμάχων σε στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης. Από τότε που μνημεία, εκκλησίες και μοναστήρια καταστράφηκαν και χωριά ολόκληρα παραδόθηκαν στις φλόγες.

Παρά τη χρονική απόσταση, ωστόσο, οι αναμνήσεις παραμένουν ολοζώντανες. Θυμόμαστε τις μητέρες που έχασαν τα παιδιά τους. Τους άνδρες που χωρίστηκαν βίαια από τις συζύγους τους. Τους γέροντες που ξεριζώθηκαν από τη γη όπου οι πρόγονοί μας είχαν ζήσει για πάνω από τρεις χιλιετίες.

Το συστηματικό σχέδιο εξάλειψης των χριστιανικών πληθυσμών και του πολιτισμού τους απέτυχε. Και απέτυχε διότι οι επιζώντες που έφθασαν στη νέα πατρίδα, δεν είχαν μαζί τους πολλά, πέρα από τις εικόνες των αγίων τους και ένα άσβεστο φως.

Αυτό που φώτισε τον δρόμο τους εδώ και τους επέτρεψε να μετατρέψουν τον πόνο σε προκοπή. Δεν αναβίωσαν απλώς ήθη και έθιμα. Έχτισαν νέες πόλεις, εμπλούτισαν την κουλτούρα μας και έγιναν η ραχοκοκαλιά του σύγχρονου κράτους. Στην ποντιακή κοινότητα οφείλουμε συνεπώς όχι μόνο χρέος μνήμης αλλά και χρέος ευγνωμοσύνης.
