Liberal International expresses grave concern over the erosion of democratic institutions and political pluralism in Türkiye.

Judicial pressure on the opposition, including actions targeting CHP leadership and opposition figures, alongside growing restrictions on freedoms of assembly, expression, and the press, undermine the rule of law and democratic accountability.

We stand in solidarity with all those peacefully defending democracy, fundamental freedoms, and human rights in Türkiye.

30 years after Taiwan’s first direct presidential election, its democracy continues to stand as a beacon of resilience, freedom, and civic strength in Asia.

Liberal International congratulates President and our full member party on the second anniversary of the administration and reaffirms our solidarity with the people of Taiwan.

At a time of growing authoritarian pressure, Taiwan’s commitment to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law remains an inspiration to the global liberal family. We also support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organisations, including the WHA, because global challenges require global cooperation.

Liberal International awarded Osman Kavala the 2025 Prize for Freedom at a ceremony in Berlin organised together with , recognising his unwavering commitment to human rights, democracy, and civil society.

Since Turkish authorities detained him in 2017, Kavala has remained a powerful symbol of resilience in the face of repression. Accepting the award on his behalf, Ayşe Buğra spoke about the years of imprisonment, her family’s determination, and the importance of international solidarity.

In his acceptance message, Kavala wrote: “To receive the Prize for Freedom is a great honour for me. I thank Liberal International for their decision. This prize has become a source of strength and motivation for me” – also noting his belief that “new political dynamic led by liberal values could make a better world possible.”

Although the European Court of Human Rights has repeatedly called for his release, Turkish authorities continue to keep Kavala imprisoned. This award recognises not only one individual’s courage, but also the ongoing struggle for freedom, justice, and democratic values.

Through powerful testimonies of Venezuelans who resisted oppression, this manifesto is both a roadmap for renewal and a tribute to courage, resilience, and hope.

At a time when democracy is under pressure worldwide, it is a reminder: freedom must be defended - every day.
