Local Elections: A big win for London cycling 13/05/2026

🗳️ Now that the dust has almost started to settle on last weeks dramatic local elections, we gave our campaigns team the unenviable job of making sense of it all for cycling...

In short, the local elections appear to have broken the traditional two-party system that has dominated London and the rest of the UK. In London, the result of that should be big wins for active travel and cycling specifically 🚲

Indeed, as a direct result of our Streets for Cycling campaign, 15+ councils are likely committed to rapid cycle network delivery 🙌

BUT... we know that the work has only just begun, when it comes to keeping the pressure on to deliver on those pledges!

Check out the full story on our website 👉

😱😮 Tube strike? Really? Today? Couldn’t say we noticed…!

Big welcome to all new (and rusty) riders out there today, rediscovering the joy of cycling 🚲

BUT… days like this show that the cycle network is in serious need of expansion 🔨

🧐 And maybe you also thought that as you cycled through your local area?

Well if you want action taken on that, click the link in our bio and email your local election candidates: https://lcc.org.uk/campaigns/streets-for-cycling/

📣 NEWS: LCC launches local election campaign, Streets for Cycling 🚲 action.lcc.org.uk/streets

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Every child should be able to cycle to school safely. Every family should be able to cycle to the park safely. Everyone should be able to cycle to the high street safely.

This already happens in the parts of London where there is a safe, connected cycle network 🚴‍♂️

🗳️ We’re asking the candidates to be your council’s next leader to commit to building a cycle network across the borough if elected on the 7th of May.

🧑‍💻 Email to ask your candidates to pledge to expand their local cycle network, by clicking the link: action.lcc.org.uk/streets

LCC's Local Group Legends 23/03/2026

🗺️ Across London there are LCC volunteers working tirelessly to bring safer cycling infrastructure to their boroughs, and get more people out on two (or more) wheels 🚴‍♂️

🫶 From putting on rides all year round, to planning meetings with councillors, creating content for social media, launching petitions, writing to MPs, the list goes on and on...

🗣️ We caught up with just a few of them in the latest issue of London Cyclist magazine:

LCC's Local Group Legends Sam Stephenson meets just a few of the LCC volunteers going above and beyond for cycling in their boroughs!

📢 NEWS: and publish Vision Zero Action Plan 2, setting out plans to end road casualties in London...

🤔 Our take on it? Broadly, we’re in favour, and tbf to TfL they’re making some bold promises...

🚘 Pushing for 20mph to be the default speed limit in urban areas
🚲 Doubling the cycle network by 2035
⛔ 200 more School Streets brought it (bringing the total to 1000)
🚛 A call for boroughs to improve lorry safety standards

Commitments like this are only won through campaigning, and we’ll keep banging the drum until all these and more are a reality in London 🚴‍♂️

💥 Around 40,000 bikes stolen every year
💥 Only around 2% of stolen cycles recovered
💥 15% of cycle theft victims stop cycling altogether
💥 Violent ‘bike jackings’ occur at a rate of twice a day

BUT… our report also sets out recommendations about what could be done to bring that number 📉

We need to show policy makers that the inaction on bike theft has gone on long enough – ✍️ if you want change, sign our petition today: https://bit.ly/4bRyUXr
