What happened to Henry Nowak should never, ever happen to anyone. No one should have to go through what his family is going through.

The police should have at least tried to examine his chest and abdomen, they should have taken his pleas about being stabbed and not being able to breathe seriously. They were not even bothering to listen properly; they repeatedly appeared to mishear what he was saying (although it is possible the mic may have amplified the sound and what they were hearing was less audible).

An 18 year old suffocated on his own blood. It doesn’t matter what happened before that. It doesn’t matter who started the fight. None of that matters when it comes to the manner in which he was allowed to die.

In regards to “politicising tragedy” this is a stupid refrain since, to put it simply, a tragedy involving police brutality should always trigger a wave of anger, indignation, and politics opposed to law enforcement excesses.

And for those racist pieces of s**t who are using this to claim to that it is actually white people who are disproportionately targeted and victims of two-tier policing, we all have good enough memories to know what your opinions are when it comes to black and asian victims of police brutality.

The most important lesson in all of this is that once someone has been presented and perceived as a criminal and a threat, empathy goes out the window and anything they say is interpreted through that prism.

That is what happened to Henry Nowak and those using his death as a launching pad for racist propaganda do that to entire racial and religious ethnicities.
