Last night, a team of Lewisham Council volunteers headed out across the borough to take part in the annual National Rough Sleeping Street Count.

The count helps us understand the extent of rough sleeping locally and informs the work we do with partners to support people off the streets.

Cllr Natalie Thomas, Cabinet Member for Safer Homes, Homelessness and Housing Services, joined the count: “No one should have to sleep rough. It was really valuable to join our volunteers out in Lewisham last night and see this important work first-hand. Getting an accurate picture helps us and our partners make sure the right support reaches people who need it.”

If you see someone sleeping rough, the best way to help is to let StreetLink know. They’ll pass the details to the local outreach team so they can offer support.

Goldsmiths University of London has confirmed it will not be going ahead with plans to move some of its courses from Deptford to Catford, when their existing lease ends next year. Instead, they plan to consolidate their estate onto their New Cross campus.

A council spokesperson said: "We worked with Goldsmiths in good faith for around a year to prepare the Old Town Hall to welcome students from September 2027, so we are surprised and frustrated by this decision. We know how important this move was to the people of Catford and our partners.

"This decision was made by Goldsmiths based on their own financial and strategic considerations following a change in university leadership last month. We made significant investment into the building to facilitate the move and officers were working on plans for the move right up until we received the communication from Goldsmiths that they would not be proceeding.

"We will take some time to consider how to move forward in terms of the long-term use of the Old Town Hall, as part of our refreshed masterplan for Catford. We remain committed to revitalising the area and working with the community to bring genuine improvements to Catford."

Check out this before and after. A fly-tipping hotspot turned into a work of art!

We have been working closely with local residents of Lucas Street in Brockley who had long told us this was a fly-tipping hotspot. Through the Love Lewisham programme we were able to offer small grant to beautify the area and look what they did!

Brilliant work by artist Alma Tisch.

This is exactly the kind of project our Love Lewisham microgrants can fund. Search "Love Lewisham" and apply on our website, or go to the link in the comments.

We're making changes to this junction (St John’s Vale x Cranbrook Road) to simplify the road layout and create a new rain garden outside the Brookmill pub.

The rain garden will help manage surface water, support local wildlife and make the area greener and more attractive.

This project has been developed in partnership with the St John's Society as well as working with the Brookmill Pub.

We know many residents value the memorial tree currently located on the existing traffic island. This First World War memorial tree, which was originally planted by the community, will be carefully moved and replanted by the council in Friendly Gardens. It will sit alongside a new Second World War memorial tree, replacing one that was recently lost.

Work is expected to begin this week, we will do our best to minimise disruption during the works and thank residents.

Lewisham People’s Day is back! Clear your diaries for Saturday 10 July 2027 in Mountsfield Park, Catford 🎉

After five years away, the borough’s biggest free festival is returning. Music, food, stalls and all of us out together - we’ve missed it as much as you have.

We want your ideas for the day. What would you love to see? Drop them in the comments and tag who’s coming with you 👇

We want Lewisham to become a Right to Grow borough! 🌱 🍅

The idea is simple – making it easier for residents and community groups to grow fruit, vegetables and plants in suitable public spaces.

This will help create greener neighbourhoods, support positive mental health and – of course – encourage people to eat healthy, fresh, culturally appropriate food.

Not to mention the fact that it will open up land for lots of residents who currently have no access to gardens or growing spaces.

We know that lots of you are already embracing food growing. And we need your ideas to make Right to Grow work!

Over the next few months, we’ll be developing our Right to Grow policy and working with residents to shape what it could look like in Lewisham. In the meantime, we’d love to hear from you. Come along to the Good Food Lewisham network meeting on Thursday 22 October and join the conversation.
