Six areas of council work, rated one by one, with a question at the end about whether you would pay more council tax to fund them. Bin collections and recycling sit under waste, streets and public spaces; housing support sits under its own heading.

Both are familiar around Elgin Avenue and Tollgate Gardens.

London Fire Brigade crews were at a Community Resilience Day down at Paddington, put on by Westminster City Council together with St John Ambulance, covering how to prepare and how to give first aid in a way that sticks. Mansion blocks have their own quirks and the crews know them.

The day was also used to push Budget Choices. That survey ends on 30 September. With borough funding set to halve, it is the mechanism for saying what should be defended.

🚲 117 bikes repaired so far this year. Yours could be next.

Dr Bike's mechanics are at Tollgate Gardens Community Centre, NW6 5SG, today between 10am and 4pm. Wheel yours down for a free once over: brake adjustment, tyres back up to pressure, and honest advice on anything that needs proper work.

They are sharing the site with the council's mobile recycling event, so the cupboard clear-out can go in the same trip. Clothes, books, toys, small electricals, homeware, batteries, lightbulbs and printer cartridges, as much as you can carry. Five items maximum on furniture, white goods, large electricals and mattresses.

Driving something big over? Book ahead on 020 3991 6228, option 4, and take proof of address with you.

They cannot take builders' waste or hazardous waste.

🏆 Nominate somebody this week.

The ActiveWestminster Awards are open, the council runs them, and they close at midnight on Monday 28 September. Nine categories, spread across clubs, coaches, volunteers, schools and young people.

If you have spent any time at Paddington Recreation Ground you have watched somebody give up their Saturday to run a session for other people's children. The same goes for every group that meets on the avenues and every club that has kept going on goodwill.

One name, two minutes, and they find out later that somebody thought of them.

Elgin Avenue and Shirland Road have generous pavements, which somehow makes a hire bike dumped across one more annoying rather than less.

The council gave councillors its enforcement figures last week: some 700 machines lifted for dangerous parking since April, and a quarter of a million pounds taken back from the firms.

Maida Vale marks Yom Kippur from sundown tonight.

Across the mansion blocks and the avenues, households are sitting down to the last meal before a twenty five hour fast, and the streets will be the quieter for it until nightfall tomorrow.

Anyone with a bike gathering dust behind the front door? Someone will service it for nothing on Church Street this afternoon.

Church Street is given over to Sunday Streets till two, one of this year's London Cycling Festival dates. Alongside the free Dr Bike service there is Westminster Wheels' preloved market, balance bike sessions and cycle skills, plus food, music and stalls.

It is a straight run down from Maida Vale, and one to do with the children rather than for them.

Save a Life this Saturday!

Join St John Ambulance, London Fire Brigade and the City of Westminster for a Community Resilience Day at Paddington Fire Station this Saturday, 5 September, from 11am–4pm.

There’ll be free first aid and trauma bleed training, emergency preparedness advice, fire brigade demonstrations and refreshments.

A great opportunity to learn practical skills that could one day help save a life. ❤️
