Louise recommends There Are Rivers in the Sky, written by Elif Shafak and narrated by Olivia Vinall✨

💬 The prose in this book is beautiful, and although I didn't find it a page turner, due to three interconnected storylines. I did find it a relaxing and an enjoyable listen, that is very well written. The stories are woven together, through the theme of water, building towards a deeply moving ending.

💬 The thing about audiobooks is that people just think, well I just go into the booth and I just read, but it is actually really telling a story. There's a difference between reading a story and telling a story.

Author Elle McNicoll discusses how Unapologetic Love Story narrator Jessie Mei Li really brought her story to life for the audiobook 🎧

Audiobooks are amazing (yes, we’re definitely fans here at LB!) — but did you know the medium has some brilliant benefits too? 🎧

From helping people relax and unwind, to reducing feelings of loneliness and making everyday tasks more enjoyable, audiobooks can have a positive impact on mental health in lots of different ways.

They’re also a fantastic way for people whose illness, mental health, physical disability or learning disability affects their ability to read printed text or hold a book to continue enjoying stories.

Sunday Staff Pick! 🎧

Helen recommends The Long Song, written by Andrea Levy and narrated by Adrian Lester✨

💬 The story follows the life of a young girl who is taken away from her family to serve as a lady’s maid, set on a plantation in Jamaica during the last years of ‘legal’ slavery and the turbulent years following its abolition.

💬 It’s told from the perspective of an elderly mother recounting her life story to her son, and the narrator’s voice is funny and charming as well as being able to tell the deep hardships and inequities of her life. Really recommend.

(CW: racism and slavery)
