Living in Hackney Scrutiny Commission is conducting an investigation into the Lea Bridge water main burst on October 2, 2018 - meeting in BSix College on 21 November at 7:00pm. All welcome.

Thames Water are responsible for managing and maintaining the water main network across London and the Thames Valley.

On the evening of the 2nd October, a major water main burst in Waterworks Lane in Hackney, off Leabridge Road. This caused serious flooding, and damage to homes, businesses, vehicles, and the highway and green spaces.

There has been previous history of burst water mains in this part of Leabridge road in recent years, which caused upset to people’s everyday lives through flooding, closed roads and damaged green space.

The Commission and local residents previously heard from Thames Water in January 2017 in regard to another water burst in Northwold Road in the Stoke Newington area, which flooded homes and businesses and caused significant damage. That flood was one of eight across the Thames Water Network in late 2016 resulting from failures/bursts on their major pipes, known as trunk mains.

Following the 2016 floods in Hackney and elsewhere, reviews commissioned and conducted by Thames Water explored the causes of these bursts to their trunk mains, their impact, and the private company's response to incidents. They also considered what lessons needed to be learnt in regards to network operations, and they set out commitments for improvement.

Further to the most recent major water main burst in Hackney, the Scrutiny Commission has called a special investigative meeting. Thames Water have been asked to attend to present their view, and answer questions, on the causes on the incident, their response, their management of the aftermath and their work and capacity to minimise the risks of similar events occurring in future.

Council Officers will also be in attendance to talk about the Council’s responses and that of its partners. Residents will also be allowed, at the chair’s discretion, to ask questions.

The meeting will take place on the 21st November in the theatre of the BSix College, Kenninghall Rd, London E5 8BP which is a venue close to the area affected. Entry free.

18 JUL 2018 — Thank you so much for joining our campaign to save this lovely Victorian building - your support is hugely appreciated!

Today is a big day, our team have been working hard on the application to Hackney Council for them to consider the building as an Asset of Community Value. This is a very big request, and it's touch and go whether they go for it.

We've got support though from some fantastic heritage experts including Save Britain, Julian Harrap Architects and Spitalfield's Trust. Plus all of you on this petition!

We are continuing to reach out to people, and every single name helps so if you can think of anyone else to forward this too - please do! And we will invite you all to the party if we are successful!!

Do be in touch if you'd like to know any more about this,

We look forward to keeping you in the loop,

Thanks
Rebecca
