We were delighted to welcome the Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy to Merton this morning following Labour’s outstanding local election result.

Not only did Labour hold Merton Council - we increased our majority, with one of our gains right here in Wimbledon.

Sir Keir thanked local campaigners and volunteers for their hard work in securing a Labour victory for our community and helping deliver another strong result for residents across Merton.

Tomorrow, Merton votes.

Labour is already delivering locally - and we want to keep building on that progress.

💷 Keeping Council Tax lower than neighbouring LibDem boroughs
🧹 New free bulky waste collections & pop-up tips protected
🛡️ Investing in safer communities
🌿 Improving parks & green spaces
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Protecting local services

There is always more to do, but Labour has a positive plan for our borough and a record of getting things done locally.

If you want that work to continue, please vote Labour tomorrow.

Out on the doorstep across Wimbledon over recent days - listening to residents and hearing a strong sense of pride in our area.

There’s real support for what’s being delivered locally - and Merton Labour is focused on building on that after 7 May.

03/05/2026

From 1 May, renters benefit from stronger protections against rogue landlords, and councils like Merton have more power to enforce the Labour's Renters’ Rights Act.

02/05/2026

If Labour is re-elected, we’ll keep delivering for Merton - cleaner streets, keeping council tax down, while continuing to invest in our communities.

I’ve seen that first-hand as a local resident, and I want to help build on it.

On 7 May, I’d be proud to represent our area alongside Cllr Eleanor Stringer - please use both your votes for us.

🧵 A reminder of our promises to the people of Merton - things we are already delivering as a council and will continue to improve.

From 1 May, we now have stronger rights for renters:

Across Wimbledon, 12,929 renters will benefit from major new protections — bringing more security, fairness, and peace of mind.

Here’s what it means for you:

🏠 No more bidding wars
It will be illegal for landlords or agents to ask for or accept offers above the advertised rent.

💷 No excessive upfront costs
Landlords won’t be able to demand more than one month’s rent in advance.

⚖️ No more “no-fault” evictions
Evictions will only be allowed where there are clear, valid grounds.

📅 More flexible tenancies
Fixed-term contracts will end — all tenancies will move to rolling monthly agreements.

🐾 Fairer rules for pet owners
Landlords must properly consider requests to keep pets.

📢 More notice if your landlord wants to sell
At least four months’ notice will be required.

This is about giving renters the stability they deserve — and ending the uncertainty too many people have faced for years.

If you rent in Wimbledon, these changes are for you.

Who runs your council affects your bills - and locally, the difference is clear.

👉 In Merton, Labour has kept costs lower and delivered more.

Here’s the difference locally 👇

• Council Tax in Merton (Band D) is around £450 lower than Lib Dem Kingston

• Among the lowest debt levels in London and compared to neighbouring boroughs

• Despite having the lowest Core Spending Power per household among neighbouring boroughs, Merton still keeps costs down

Because of the financial decisions we’ve taken, we’ve been able to spend more on what matters to residents.

The choice locally is simple:

👉 Lower bills and responsible finances with Labour
👉 Or higher costs under the Lib Dems

Safer communities in Merton 🛡️

Merton is one of the safest boroughs in London - and we’re working to keep it that way.

Working with police, investing in CCTV and enforcement, and tackling anti-social behaviour so residents feel safe day and night.
