Trinidad and Tobago’s Doubles Reign in Brixton
Trinidad and Tobago High Commission, London, was aptly represented at the JUST VIBEZ - Doubles & Vibez event held at the Hootananny, Brixton on Saturday 30th May. The Doubles Vibez was held to showcase the cuisine and culture of Trinidad and Tobago and to share it with the wider community.
The event presented an ideal opportunity for the High Commission to engage with the diaspora. Officers from the High Commission included First Secretary Carina Latoo, officers Beverley Reviero-Awonaya and Lawson Lovell from the Public Affairs, Culture and Tourism Unit together with officers Ethan Sealy and Nadine Mohammed from the Passports and Immigration Unit.
Congratulations to all doubles vendors who participated, with A Trini Thing winning the doubles competition, Taste D Vibes in second place and Trini Vibez in third place. There were six doubles chefs and their helpers from across the UK representing Trinidad and the United Kingdom competing for the Doubles and Vibez Trophy.
The High Commission presented an Angostura gift prize and a voucher for two for afternoon tea with the Acting High Commissioner Urvashi Ramnarine courtesy the Sofitel Hotel St James Park, London.
Music on the day was provided by Just Vibez DJs, including Supertrini, tassa drummer Nigel Rampartap and the steel pan player Kyron Akal. The event also featured Chutney soca, card games and various activities for families and children.
Special commendation must be given to JUST VIBEZ for bringing the culture of Trinidad and Tobago to the diaspora and others throughout the UK. This is the second Doubles Vibez event with an estimated crowd of 1,400 persons. The day underscored the growing popularity of Caribbean cuisine and culture throughout the UK.
Trinidad and Tobago’s cuisine and culture has truly made its mark on the UK entertainment scene!
