🇩🇰Happy Constitution Day!

Today we celebrate the fact that Denmark has been a democracy for 177 years, safeguarding basic rights such as freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to vote.

Here are some facts about the Danish Constitutional Act:

💡 The Act was signed in 1849 and is thereby one of the oldest in the world.
💡 The Act marked the Danish transition from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy, where the monarch has governing - but limited - power regulated by the rules of the Constitutional Act.
💡 The Act introduced the separation of powers in Denmark - the legislative, executive and judicial branch.
💡 The Act has only been amended 4 times since its signing in 1849.

Recently, the Embassy’s Defence Attaché took part in a ceremony commemorating the Danish WWII War Sailors at the Danish Memorial inside Newcastle Cathedral. The event was honoured by the presence of Lord Mayor Cllr Henry Gallagher, The Very Reverend Lee Batson, and organiser Dr Hans Christian Andersen.

Many Danish war sailors who later settled in Newcastle had sailed under the Red Ensign, among other flags. Inside the Cathedral, a striking memorial window commemorates their legacy and features the city arms of major Danish seafaring cities.

The event was kindly supported by the Royal Navy Association.
