Embassy of Iceland in London

The Embassy was pleased to host its Honorary Consuls for a meeting and a reception last week. The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss current developments in Iceland, upcoming projects and to exchange information and updates from their respective regions.

On this occasion, the Honorary Consuls presented Ambassador Sturla Sigurjónsson with a farewell gift, a beautiful artwork by the UK based Icelandic artist Kristjana S. Williams. The Embassy extends its sincere thanks for the Honorary Consuls continued support and important contribution.

Sendiráð Íslands í London hélt í síðustu viku fund og móttöku fyrir ræðismenn, þar sem tækifæri gafst til að fara yfir stöðu mála á Íslandi, komandi verkefni og áskoranir og upplýsingar frá þeirra umdæmum.

Þá færðu ræðismennirnir Sturlu Sigurjónssyni sendiherra einnig fallega kveðjugjöf, listaverk eftir íslensku listakonuna Kristjönu S. Williams. Sendiráðið þakkar ræðismönnunum kærlega fyrir mikilvægt framlag og stuðning.

Today, 17 May, is the International Day against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. On the international stage, Iceland advocates for human rights and legal reforms and fights against all forms of violence, discrimination and prejudice against LGBTQI+ people.

Human rights are for everyone, regardless of s*xual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or s*x characteristics.

Í dag, 17. maí, er alþjóðlegur dagur gegn fordómum í garð hinsegin fólks. Ísland beitir sér á alþjóðlegum vettvangi fyrir mannréttindum alls fólks og reynir að stuðla að lagalegum umbótum og berst gegn hvers konar ofbeldi, mismunun og fordómum í garð hinsegin fólks.

Sendiráðið vekur athygli á sérstöku íslensku og færeysku tónlistarkvöldi þann 19. maí, á Colours Hoxton í London, í tengslum við tónlistarhátíðina The Great Escape. Þar munu íslenska söngkonan Elín Hall og íslenska hljómsveitin Spacestation koma fram ásamt færeyska tónlistarfólkinu Marianna Winter og Marius DC.

The Embassy would like to draw attention to a special Icelandic and Faroese music evening on May 19 at Colours Hoxton in London, held in connection with the music festival The Great Escape. The Icelandic singer Elín Hall and the Icelandic band Spacestation will perform alongside the Faroese artists Marianna Winter and Marius DC.

The Embassy congratulates Álfrún Gísladóttir on the award of Arts Council funding for the development of her play, Dream House. This achievement follows the success of her previous work, Dead Air, which the Embassy supported to participate at the Edinburgh Festival last year.

Audiences in London now have the opportunity to experience an early introduction to this new work, with a work-in-progress reading presented after performances of Dead Air at Greenwich Theatre, running from 13 to 16 May.

Karl III konungur setti í dag breska þingið með hefðbundinni viðhöfn í lávarðadeildinni og flutti þar hásætisræðu þar sem hann tilkynnti fyrirhugaðar ríkisheimsóknir til Bretlands á komandi ári og gerði grein fyrir áformum ríkisstjórnarinnar um lagasetningu. Sturla Sigurjónsson sendiherra var viðstaddur sem fulltrúi Íslands.

His Majesty King Charles III opened the new session of the Parliament of the United Kingdom with a gracious speech from the throne, in which he gave notice of forthcoming state visits and set out the government’s legislative programme. Ambassador Sturla Sigurjónsson represented Iceland at the State Opening.

Það eru ýmsir árlegir viðburðir í Bretlandi á fyrri hluta sumars sem eru sóttir af starfsfólki sendiráða. Sturla Sigurjónsson sendiherra, Ragnhildur E. Arnórsdóttir sendiráðunautur og Brynja Jónsdóttir sendiráðsritari voru í dag gestir Karls III konungs í garðveislu við Buckingham-höll.

There are various annual events in the United Kingdom during early summer that are attended by foreign diplomats. Ambassador Sturla Sigurjónsson, Deputy Head of Mission Ragnhildur E. Arnórsdóttir and Second Secretary Brynja Jónsdóttir were today guests of His Majesty King Charles III at a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Í síðustu viku fór fram reglulegt samráð Íslands og Bretlands á embættismannastigi um alþjóða-, öryggis- og varnarmál. Ýmis mál voru til umræðu á fundinum, meðal annars tvíhliða samskipti ríkjanna, staða alþjóðamála, vaxandi samstarf á sviði varnarmála, svæðisbundið samstarf, málefni Úkraínu og ástand mála í Mið-Austurlöndum.

BBC birti nýverið skemmtilega grein þar sem rætt var við íslensku tónlistarkonuna Laufey, og fjallað um feril hennar, listsköpun og alþjóðlega velgengni. Greinin dregur fram hvernig Laufey sameinar djass- og klassíska tónlist við samtímatónlist og nær þannig til breiðs hóps um allan heim.

Íslenska hljómsveitin Sigur Rós mun koma fram á sérstökum viðburði í tilefni 100 ára afmælis Sir David Attenborough,“100 Years on Planet Earth“, þann 8. maí í Royal Albert Hall í London. Hljómsveitin mun flytja lagið Hoppípolla sem notað var í kynningarefni fyrir Planet Earth og Planet Earth II. Viðburðurinn verður sendur út í beinni útsendingu á BBC.

The Icelandic band Sigur Rós will perform at a special event honouring Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, “100 Years on Planet Earth,” on May 8 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The band will perform the song Hoppípolla, which was used in promotional material for Planet Earth and Planet Earth II. The event will be broadcast live on the BBC.

The Embassy draws attention to a joint concert by the Icelandic choir in London and the Cantabile women’s choir at St. Alfege Church in Greenwich on Saturday, May 2, at 4:30 pm. The programme consists mainly of Icelandic music, and tickets are sold at the door. The conductors are Margrét J. Pálmadóttir and Helgi R. Ingvarsson. Pianists are Jón Elísson and Ásta Haraldsdóttir. Soloists include Hanna B. Guðjónsdóttir, Björg Birgisdóttir, Rannveig Káradóttir and Peter Aisher.
