Sutton House

Over the past few weeks, our volunteers have been sorting through archaeological finds, found during digs at Sutton House in the 90s. These are some of the interesting things they have been organising, including pottery sherds, clay pipes, animal bone and oyster shells.

Built in 1535 by Sir Ralph Sadleir, a prominent courtier of Henry VIII, Sutton House is the oldest domestic building in Hackney featuring beautiful oak-panelled rooms, carved fireplaces, and a charming courtyard...

As a House Experience Volunteer, you’ll welcome visitors, lead guided tours through our Tudor building, bring self-led visits to life, and support the welcome desk on our open days (Fridays & Sundays).

📣 Sutton House reopens Sunday 1 March!

We'll be reopening on Sunday 1 March between 11am–4pm, with tours running at 11.30am and 2.30pm (walk in).

From then on, Sutton House will be open every Friday and Sunday, 11am–4pm, with tours at 11.30am and 2.30pm.

Inspired by the current display of 17th century paper cuts made by Sutton House schoolgirls, our over 55’s community group made these snowflakes to spread festive joy.

Come to Sutton House this Friday to see our display of an air raid shelter. During World War II, Sutton House became a shelter from the Blitz for local residents in Hackney. We have recreated what this room would have looked like during winter during the 1940s.

It’s our favourite time of year at Sutton House. The fires are lit and the stockings are hung. Join us today until 4 pm for a self guided tour of our new exhibition Toys of Christmas Past.

If you’ve passed through our Breaker’s Yard, you may have noticed fresh produce growing, such as these apples. When Sir Ralph Sadleir lived at the property in the 16th century, there would have been a garden which provided food for the kitchen and family to enjoy. Come to Sutton House this Friday to see our beautiful Breaker’s Yard garden.

This sunny weather is perfect for having a picnic in our community garden, the Breaker’s Yard.🌳

This small find, ‘the bather’, would have been used as an educational example of Susanna or Bathsheba, who are described as bathing in the Bible.

We are so excited to announce our exhibition, Lost by Schoolgirls: A display of 17th century papercuts.
Originally built for one of Henry VIII’s statesmen, Sutton House has been used for a variety of purposes over the years, becoming a school in the 17th century. During this time, it’s thought that paper shapes cut out by schoolgirls slipped through gaps in the floorboards, remaining undiscovered until now.
The paper-cuttings will be on display Fridays and Sundays 11am to 4pm at Sutton House until December 2024.
