KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Navigating emergent Geoeconomic, Demographic, Environmental and Technological Challenges Successfully
For this speech, Sony Kapoor will draw on the interdisciplinary work he leads at the EUI as well as his work for the Indian and Brazilian G-20s to discuss the following.
• The current state of institutional investment, particularly in the EU
• The historical drivers of economic growth and financial profitability
• The impact of environmental risks and opportunities globally
• The impact of demographic shifts, globally and in the EU
• The impact of fast paced technological changes
• The risk from and impact of rising military and economic conflict and tensions
• The impact of new trade, investment and geopolitical risks and opportunities
Despite the dominance of often negative headlines on conflict, demographics and climate, and breathless optimism about technology, the reality is far more nuanced. But big changes are indeed afoot. Those who are well informed, nimble, and understand how the developments across energy, environment, economics, technology and geopolitics influence each other, and the risk and return landscape for institutional investors can emerge financially and institutionally stronger, even as others get left behind. The keynote will end with specific recommendations for institutional investors on how to get ahead of the game.

I ended the podcast with some concrete suggestions on what could actually help the UK increase productivity and growth instead ....

COVID-19’s economic impact on crumbling GDPs, collapsing tax revenues and ballooning fiscal deficits will be much larger than what has been reported thus far. Any hesitation in throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the health, employment, state aid and financial rescue interventions that are needed will literally kill citizens and destroy the economy. To combat COVID-19, central banks, including the ECB, must cross the Rubicon of monetary financing and immediately transfer the 20%-30% of GDP this will cost into fiscal coffers.
