We recently commissioned a study which highlighted that more than half of adults consider themselves to be lonely because they are too busy or shy to socialise with others. The study found that more than half of adults enjoy being surrounded by greenery, and 53% of people said it boosts their mood.
As today is National Make a Friend Day, we wanted to highlight the RHS Garden for Friendship, which will be featured at this year, and ways that you can get involved with community gardening. The RHS Garden for Friendship has been designed by Jo Thompson Garden Design in collaboration with Zoe Ball and celebrates how you can make great friends through gardening - from community gardening, to sharing plants with your neighbours and spending time in the garden socially.
We are now in our third year collaborating with NHS England and NHS Improvement to promote gardening for good mental health and we will once again see the our Feature Garden from be redesigned and created at an NHS Mental Health Trust.
Joining a community gardening group is a fantastic way to make friends through gardening. Whether it's greening a local area, starting a food growing project or conserving an area for wildlife – community gardening can have a huge impact for both people and places.
