Mr. Godwin Obaseki, one of the leading contenders for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming poll in Edo State, has debunked insinuations in some quarters that he is the “anointed candidate” of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
He said that, from his assessment of his co-contestants, majority of them have what it takes to govern the state.
“I don’t know about being an anointed candidate. I know that I decided when I looked at the horizon and looked at the future. I looked at the challenges that we’re facing and we’re likely to face in the future. I felt that this is not the time to abandon ship.
“This is the time (when) people who have something to offer should stand up, and I am excited that quite a number of aspirants are people who are accomplished, who have done well in politics, in their professions or in their businesses. These are very respectable people. In other words, I have lots of respect for most of the other aspirants.

“I cannot think of one aspirant today who is not good enough to be a governor of Edo State. Who could have been my governor and, therefore, I just think that it is important to be cordial; it is important to show respect; it is important to share ideas because, at the end of the day, what is it all about?
“It is about a contestation of ideas as to who can make Edo better than Oshiomhole did,” he said.
On his plans for the state, Obaseki said that he was going to bring to bear his experience, as a man who works round the clock; in ensuring that many blue-chip businesses grow, in line with the dream of their initiators.

• The power project is expected to bring reliable
and affordable energy to the nation’s grid, aimed
at serving nearly 12 million residential consumers.
Mr.Godwin Obaseki currently serves as the
Chairman of the Edo State Government Economic
and Strategy Team (EST). He served as founding
secretary for a New York based US Africa
Chamber of Commerce New York in 1992, which
promoted US organisations doing business in
Africa.
Obaseki as chairman of The Edo State Economic
Team had advised Governor Oshiomhole to take
upon himself some ambitiously near impossible
tasks and turned them around. The Azura/Edo
Independent Power Project and Edo Water Storm
project are obvious examples. The former is a $1
billion project and the first Nigerian power project
to benefit from the World Bank’s risk guarantee
status, covered by the global bank’s Partial Risk
Guarantee structure for developing needs of
emerging global markets. It is very credible
evidence that the state is a viable centre for
global investment hub.
Obaseki is instrumental to the setting up of the
450MW Azura-Edo gas power project which
finally reached financial closure on 28 December,
2015.
Azura Power West Africa managing director and
Amaya Capital director David Ladipo told African
Energy that the first debt drawdown had taken
place on 29 December with notice to proceed
issued to engineering, procurement and
construction contractors Siemens and Julius
Berger the following day.
