CBI vs Modi Govt-

At the stroke of midnight hour....

…used to be a phrase that reminded one of the beginning of a speech by Jawarharlal Nehru announcing India’s Independence. But 71 years later, times have certainly changed and how! - “at the stroke of midnight” is now a phrase that marks the hour of hasty decisions by panicking government. Decisions that are currently being scrutinized by the Supreme Court to see if the democracy of an independent nation has been comprised. Oh the irony!

The sudden overnight removal of CBI Director, Mr Alok Verma, by the Indian government is a mystery that tops the list of the cases being dealt by the Supreme Court. Cases which should include, amongst other things, justice for r**e victims, justice for farmers with unheard pleas and suspicious deals of defence aircrafts. It may well be true that one should refrain from commenting on a pending judgement. In fact, even news channels have suffered the wrath of high-ranking industrialists who have sued the media thousands of crores for coverage of the Rafale deal. However, this does not mean that one stop observing and being aware of how one’s decisions and vote have influenced the events that are occurring in India today.

Thankfully, the Constitution of India has provided for an independent and impartial judiciary and citizens will be witnesses to the decision of the CBI investigation. But while we wait for justice to take its course, the coming year gives a platform for these citizens of a democratic nation, to be witnesses to change by voicing their collective statement as votes. Because democracy is everyone’s business.
While fingers are being pointed everywhere, we forget that we too are responsible for our country. Do we really want the nation to be in a position where the judicial system is investigating the compromise of democracy? Should we not worry that India’s inequality-adjusted HDI (Human development index) is currently less than average, placing the nation at par with third-world countries?

Development is measured by more than one index – but it seems that the current government is projecting this development through apparent GDP increases – in a country where there is a forced economic disparity, it doesn’t take a genius to realise that GDP is not a true reflection of the country’s development.

Choose today to at least be aware of the events in our country and the impact that these events are already having on the democracy. It should not take too long to realise that it is time for a change. It is time to redefine the imminent future of the country. Let the votes be cast such that India wakes up, at the stroke of the midnight hour in 2019, to be led by a party that prioritises the interests of the common man.

Remembering Sardar Patel

We welcome the unveiling of Statue of Unity by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the birth anniversary of India’s first Home Minister on October 31 in the State of Gujarat.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was among one of the great leaders that India has produced with the legacy of struggle for Independence for our country. The Executive Committee on behalf of its members and supporters pay tribute to ‘Sardar’ who has served the Congress Party through the years of its legacy of contribution to unite India and lay foundation for a new independent nation based on Parliamentary democracy.

The President of the Indian National Congress Sri Rahul Gandhi MP MLS has quite rightly identified the challenge for the nation by saying that the next general election will be a battle of ideologies. It will define the destiny of our nation where the parliamentary democracy would face an onslaught of those who have been replace our most cherished institution by a single political dogma to dominate control over India; making a ‘Hindutva Raj’.

The evidence of the dangerous came to public when four of the most senior Supreme Court Judges of India during an unprecedented press conference in the history of India since independence. Their cry was, “the democracy is in danger’. The intolerable situation was exposed the level of interference by the elected executives in to the independence of one of the most important pillars of democracy.

The unfolding sage of total chaos and mismanaging of our internal security authorities, namely the Central Burau of Investigations has also reached a state of disrepute under the direct responsibility of the Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi and his administration. The debris thrown out into open by the episodes of internal implosion in the services reveals without any doubts the level of political and financial corruptions at most senior levels.

Most befitting tribute to the ‘Iron-Man’ of India would be to strengthen the Unity of India where diversity is embraced in the parliamentary democracy with good and effective governance. Undermining processes to ensure independent and effective functioning of such an important agency has been eroded, exhibiting a monumental failure of providing effective monitoring and accountability, this administration has failed the democracy.

Adding sault to the wounds, while the Prime Minister is inaugurating the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the BJP Chief Minister has announced that his government would bring a law to make it mandatory for manufacturing and service sector entrepreneurs to hire 80 per cent of their total workforce from the state. The Chief Minister Vijay Rupani (BJP) has not accepted the principal of creating ‘no-go areas’ for the Indian citizens to seek employment in Gujarat. It is a travesty of the tribute in the name of building Unity in India.

The fact that Sardar Patel was a Congress leader and at the core of its ideology; indeed, not a ‘figure’ or ‘name’ to be appropriated by any political interests. Along with Sri Jawaharlal Nehru, they were the most trusted and closest allies of Mahatma Gandhi during the period of struggle of India for independence. It is a political mischief to compare the two most valuable jewels - Sardar and Nehru, at the sides of Mahatma. Each one having their own characteristic, temperament, skills, but bound by a common thread of comradeship through journey of struggle for independence

The great giants of our heritage were larger than any tallest monuments that we can build physical to show our gratitude. A travesty of our modern political leadership is that those who have been diametrically opposed to Sardar Patel’s commitment to principals of fairness, equality and freedom are actively busy redefining ‘secularism’ to fit in to their own Hindutva- a political dogma to replace the democracy, which was never in his bones.

Yes, had he been alive longer his contribution would have enriched the country more; he would have shut down the activities of the bodies such as Rastriya Sevan Sangh and many bodies whose per-occupation was known to be a subtle political activity to replace the Indian Democracy with a political dogma - Hindutva Raj. The fact was that Sardar Patel had suffered ill health for some years during the per-independence period and that finally had taken him away from us within less than three years after independence.

Our challenge is to retrieve the values of parliamentary democracy and its core pillars to help heal the wounds of bitterness created of gaining communal supremacy to build a nation that could be at peace within itself. And, that we believe would be one of the most befitting tribute to Sardar Patel. b
