Delighted to receive a copy of this fantastic new book in the post. We helped the Historic England team with their picture research for this publication and read through some of the draft text for them. So we might be slightly biased, but we think this is an excellent piece of work, and well worth picking up.

“The great day has arrived and I keep thinking of you and hope you are enjoying yourself as much as possible.”

“...most of the houses were decorated with fairy lights in V-shapes between flags. It was really pretty and I thought she might remember it for always.”

Two letters, sent on the first VE Day, from one beloved to another.

To commemorate 80 years since VE Day and the subsequent end of World War Two, we worked with author Roseanna Rolph to piece together her grandparents' love story. Told through uncovered letters that span from The Blitz to the Battle of Normandy, these letters feature in a new display in the museum's gallery.

John and Rita Reed married in September 1939, just several days after the outbreak of war. After completing officer commissioning training, John's service took him from Dunkirk to the D-Day landings and participating in the North-West Europe campaign and Battle of Normandy. Rita wrote to John as often as she could, often addressing him as ‘My dearest Mr Snippet’ as he would often include snippets of information in his letters about the army and how the war was progressing from a military perspective.

John and Rita's story has helped form the basic of Roseanna's new book Dear Mr Snippet and you can learn more about both in our latest blog post by heading to the link below.
